Man I hate this guys and it seems like it is that time of year. We are getting a lot of baby scorpions and a few mamas in our apt, here in South Austin. We have tried spraying out side around the window, door frames, etc...

We have put granules out and we have found a few inside that were dead or dying. So something is working, but any suggestions on how to thwart these annoying little critters? Does purchasing one of those flash lights really work on identifying them at night?

Only reason I ask that last part is because the wife found one on the side of our mattress. We killed him before he decided to light us up in our sleep, but damn I sure don't want one of those to crawl in my pants while I am asleep. Biggest fear.

TIA

Growing up in the hill country I have been stung so many times that I have lost count.

It sucks.

There is not much you can do than what you have already tried. They like to get into things like sheets, pants, shoes etc so check before you dive in.

They also like hiding in drains and faucets, and will crawl out when the water starts.

Had one in my jeans and it got me three or four times before I could get them back off.

Had two or three in bed.

Got in a fight with one trying to hide in the shower playing hide and go seek in the house (big no no to begin with).

I could go on.

Wife was stung twice (first time ever) in the past month. We had a pest control guy come out and do some work. Just so you know their "nests" are in the attics a lot of the time. Haven't seen any in the last few days so maybe he at least knocked them back.

First thing to know about scorpions is that almost all pesticides are ineffective against them.

I always thought wasp killer was amazing stuff. I once coated a scorpion on my front porch with the stuff. An hour later he was just wiggling around, not getting away, but not dead.

Pest control gets rid of other bugs, which is what scorpions eat. So it can help. But physical barriers (sealing openings) are also important.

Yeah I was afraid of that attic/wall scenario. I also think they are there and coming in through the electrical outlets. I thought about baiting in there but don't know how well that really works. Got to try something else but just stuck now. I know I could always move, but that is not an option at the moment.

Thanks again.

Yeah outlets are an easy access point. If you want to get serious take off all of your covers and add an insulator and put the covers back on. Not fool proof but it can't hurt. Link for Insulator

Max: Is that from experience? I will have to take that and packing the outlets with insulation into serious thought. Shouldn't be that expensive and definitely cannot hurt.

Yes. I had scorpions really bad at my place the first summer I lived there. Treated the interior perimeter & exterior perimeter of the house, + about 3' of the ground around the exterior perimeter. Knock on wood, I have not seen another scorpion inside the house since.

I can 2nd (or was it 3rd?) the Demon WP. I spray it at the base of the interior walls and door thresholds. The only scorpions I find are dead ones.

I normally get mine at feed store types of places.

Another vote for Demon WP.

We built a new house last year out in the sticks and we have scorpions everywhere. Ev. Ery. Where.

Last July we were killing about 3-5 a day inside and if you walked around outside the house at night, you could easily kill 30+ a night.

I'll spray Demon at 2 packets per gallon around the outside perimeter, inside the weep holes of the brick, around doors and windows and any little crack or crevice they can crawl in. I'll also spray inside along the base boards, behind and under cabinets and appliances, and inside and around the doors to the attic. I'll have to reapply in about 6-8 weeks during the warmer months or if we get a really good rain like last night/today.

I haven't done anything to the outlets/switches, but I've seen one scurry in there before I could kill him. I've also been told that stuffing the weep holes in the brick with steel wool helps, but I haven't tried that yet. They also like to hide under rocks, logs, mulch, potted plants, etc. So watch around those as well.

And the UV Flashlights work pretty well. I bought a little cheap one for when I go "scorpion hunting". They work really well in the dark.

Very similar chemistry. Whichever is cheaper or easier to get should do it.

We use Demon WP at the deerlease, which is virtually infested with them.

Normal dose of Demon WP is one water soluable packet/gallon. For Scorpions, you are supposed to double that.

The residual for Demon WP in the double dose does last for more than one month. If sprayed inside, and the barrier is not wiped or swept away, it will kill them for a few months. It just does not kill them immediately. They have to cross it and it takes a little while. That's why we spray our blinds two weeks in advance of season, along with the camper, and barn we cook in. Opening weekend we just pick up the dead ones. Everywhere.

I found some scorpions in my house last year. It's the first time in years that I'd seen one.

I went to TSC and got the Demon, I don't know if it worked, but I haven't seen a scorpion since.

BTW, if you go look for Demon, it's in a little bag, it's not a big package like most of the other stuff in the pest control aisle. This was on one of the little racks with alligator clips holding the bags.

Get a few house cats, they love to kill them. Also my redbone hound will bark at them in the house until I come and kill them.

We built a house in the country 4 years ago. Was not long until the scorpions moved in with us. Our pest control service "dusts" the attic with something that knocks the scorpions out. If they do not dust the attic, we will have scorpions. Sorry that I do not know what they use.

Like I said earlier Suspend SC is the best for all kinds of insects including scorpions. Use the max of 1.5 ounces per gallon. You can also mix Gentrol IGR with Suspend SC to a added insect growth regulator effect.

Suspend SC - 1 Pint
Suspend SC provides effective knockdown and long term residual control of over fifty pests. Very low usage rates makes the product safe to use in food handling areas, mattresses, furniture, cushions and other surfaces where sensitivity is an issue. Suspend SC residues have no odor or visible residues and will not damage surfaces where water alone causes no damage.

Why Should You Use?
Suspend is more economical, flexible and effective compared to other concentrates.

Target Pest(s): Ants, Carpenter ants, Carpet beetles, Firebrats, Fleas, Gnats, Midges, Centipedes, Millipedes, Pantry pests, Silverfish, Ticks, Bees, Bedbugs, Boxelder bugs, Cecid Flies, Cockroaches, Crickets, Stable flies, House flies, and other insects.
Manufactured By: Bayer
Active Ingredient: Deltamethrin - 4.75%
Size: 16 oz.
Yield/Application: 0.25 to 0.75 fl. oz. per gallon of water

Directions for Use
Mix Suspend with water following the dilution rates in the product label. Active ingredient concentration in solutions range from 0.01% to 0.06%, depending on the target pest/s. Apply using hand pressurized or power operated sprayers. Shake well before using. Partially fill applicator tanks 1/2 full with water before adding the proper amount of concentrate. Agitate the tank and add the remaining volume of water. Re-agitate to obtain a uniform mixture. The product may be tank mixed with currently registered pesticides and insect growth regulators unless prohibited by the product label. Solutions can be converted to foam used in treating structural voids. Mix Suspend SC with a foaming agent following the mixing instructions as indicated in the foaming agent label.

Use finished solutions for crack and crevice, spot and surface treatments indoors. Use 0.25 to 1.5 ounces of Suspend per gallon of water to treat 1,000 square feet of surface. Apply as a coarse low pressure spray to cracks, crevices, voids and other sites where insect live, feed and breed. Apply as directed in the product label.

Use Suspend SC as a residual or broadcast spray to perimeters, lawns, grounds, landscapes and ornamental plants. Apply as a coarse, low-pressure spray to outdoor building surfaces, porches, patios, eaves, screens, window frames, garbage dumps, lawns and ornamental plants. Treat a band of soil 6 to 10 feet wide around and adjacent to buildings and structures. Treat foundations up to a height of 3 feet.

Control wood-damaging insects by applying spray or foam solutions having 0.06% Deltamethrin. Using the appropriate application equipment, apply solutions to infested surfaces and damaged wooden structures. Inject solutions inside termite carton nests and damaged wood. Drill holes if necessary. Apply as a coarse fan spray to exposed insects and infested surfaces.

For broadcast application in lawns, apply using a minimum of 2 gallons per 1,000 square feet. Use higher volumes for adequate coverage of thick foliage. Apply thoroughly and uniformly over turfgrass and ornamentals.

Where to Apply
Suspend SC is for residential, commercial, industrial and institutional control of the listed pests. Areas of use include apartments, bakeries, bottling facilities, breweries, cafeterias, canneries, food manufacturing and processing plants, food service establishments, granaries, hospitals, hotels, kitchens, laboratories, nursing homes, office buildings, restaurants, schools, warehouses and transports such as aircraft, buses, mobile homes, ships, trailers and trucks.

Yes same places or you can order online at various sites including Amazon. Same thing for Gentrol IGR. Mix the Gentrol IGR with the Suspend SC.

Depon WP will kill some scorpions but it won't put a dent in the overall amount of them you see crawling alive in the house, at least that has been the case with us. When I used that in the past, we'd see tons of dead scorpions, especially in the outdoor areas that were sprayed, but we'd also see the one or two live ones each day that we are accustomed to seeing.

It works really well for us. Therefore, I think that either you are not using it at the concentration needed to kill scorpions, or you aren't putting it where it needs to be. But kill them it does....

I agree with 2001_2005. We've been using DWP for three years now, doing monthly spray downs both inside and outside the house. We do see dead scorpions, presumably poisoned. However, the live ones still appear on a regular basis. We also still trap quite a few on our sticky pads.

I'm ready to try a new poison, and will look into Suspend SC.

Does anyone use Bifen? I buy it at the same feedstore I used to buy Demon at. It has worked better for us on scorpions than Demon plus an exterminator I know says that's all he ever uses for his business. He said its also safer to use around children and pets than some of the other products, including Demon. That was important to us since we have a 2 & 4 year old.

i used diazinon sprayed all over the foundation, exterior walls, eaves, and about a 5 ft swath around the house. it took a few days to take effect, but would control them for about 2 weeks or until it rained.
