Could that be a water dragon that got loose?

I honestly can't make out a 'fin'. Hard for me to tell much about it from the picture.

It's a basilisk I'm pretty sure. Probably someone's escaped pet.

Unless you live near Boca Raton, Florida.

for reference:

Yep, someone's escaped pet. Not a native lizard.

Cant tell how long it is from the picture, but I know there are cuban brown anoles that are spreading in texas and elsewhere in the south. They are larger than the green anoles we typically see around here, but the lizard in that picture looks maybe too big.

They apparently can grow up to 3 feet long. That one looks like it's about 18".

Interesting tie in. I saw an anole with a ridge behind his head. I know it was a male but I've never seen one with a ridge like this, any one seen that? He was displaying to another male, so it coulda been a dominance thing.

Brown Anole. Introduced species that is becoming more and more prevalent in and around Houston. With that said-KILL IT WITH FIRE

speaking of escaped pets, heard multiple reports of a python being spotted in the Nueces River near Calallen. people need to keep their pets on a leash.

Only.- yes the ridge is a dominance display and not always fully extended.

Neighbor kids has had all manner of reptiles for years. Always escaping. Last year he had a "Bearded Dragon". - that is what he called it - that got loose and scared my wife to death. It was much bigger - but could this be its spawn?

Houston is location. I will try to clean up the picture.

Another out of place lizard story.

We were about 10 miles behind the Terlingua ghost town messing around.

We were looking around a deserted rv site and saw a pipe going down into the ground. It was about a foot in diameter, flush with the ground and about a foot deep.

In that pipe were three lizards. With tail about 9-12 inches long. One was dead. I don't know how all 3 got in there. We actually found some salad tongs and got the two living ones out.

Which promptly ran off like this:

And yes, they had the frilled necks fanned out in the pipe and while they ran.

Have no idea how they got there. Who know. We may have released a breeding pair and they have now taken over the Big Bend area. Nahhh.

It's an agitated male Brown Anole (Norops sagrei). Our native green anoles will get the fans on the neck and back as well but not as pronounced. Brown anoles pop up in nurseries, landscaped areas, etc. Pretty common around Houston.

Markandles- you probably saw some Collared Lizards (Crotaphytus sp.) The will run in a bipedal fashion and have broader heads, though not a neck fan like the lizard you posted.

12f, that's the crazy thing, they had the full fan.

Being a 10 year old, of course we didn't immediately free them. We poked at them with sticks for a while. And it would fan out like that.

We tried to take the dead one with us, but Mom vetoed that.
