SIAP. I thought this article in Forbes was interesting about test firing a 3D printed gun in. 380 caliber. The only non printed part is the firing pin, which is a nail.

A sip created it, but still a good article.

...and it's already being discussed in Congress bc they are scared millions of untraceable guns are about to hit the street. Registration of 3D printers is imminent.

They can pass through metal detectors. Unlike Glocks, these really are plastic guns (even if they're only good for one shot).

If the firing pin is iron, it won't pass through a metal detector.

And until they make mass produced and economically viable ammo that is not brass or steel cased with a projectile made of something metallic, ammo cannot pass through metal detectors either.

And both will readily show up on even the low grade x-ray machines typically found at airports.

what if the firing pin is incorporated into something innocuous like a belt buckle, or tweezers, eyeglass frames, etc?

Sorry, I fixed the link.

Yeah if the firing pin is a nail, it can be hidden elsewhere.

The bullets can be hidden in a lucky rabbit foot keychain.

That's not the point! It's a plastic gun and must be banned!

I'm sure that with enough innovation, a very dedicated person could get anything past the all watching eyes of TSA security.

What about the ammo? How are you going to address that?

Also, most airports have the full body scanners as the primary screening method now, and if you opt out you are subject to not only the metal detector, but one of those lovely pat downs.

And keep in mind that this is a one shot deal as well. Not like it's a miniature AR or pipe bomb.

A nail is not on the no-fly list and you can put the ammo in your pooper.

Anyone that really wants to do something, can. Even the secret service admits they can't stop an assassin who is willing to die in the process.

The key is not endless searches but an effective kinetic response to a bad guy with a gun.

The TSA (Thousands Standing Around) are removing all the body scanners since they have finally admitted they don't work.

I also think they know they are more dangerous than they have let on as well...

This, over and over again.

Unfortunately it is much more expedient to broader political gain to regulate the crap out of the many for the infractions of the few.
