Need input on stripping these outdoor steel chairs. They're about 60+ years old and probably painted with a lead based paint. Ok to sand it to bare metal or hot strip it then sand?



The two holes are from Mrs Fools Grandma shooting at her goats. She wasn't a very good shot. You should see the other two chairs!!!

You should probably chew the paint off instead of sanding.

Sandblast them.

Sanding or sandblasting is fine, just make sure you wear a respirator/air filtration device while doing it if you honestly think this stuff is coated with lead based paint.

If its as old as you say it is then it probably has lead in the paint

If you sand it or disturb it so that it becomes airborne then there is a risk of ingesting it or breathing it in. If you use some type of wet stripping agent then the risk is much less. Make sure you take a shower and wash your clothes after you get done. If not you risk getting it on other stuff. I've heard yogurt will help lower lead levels in your body.

Have you thought about using a rust-sealant paint?

I saw some in passing and wondered if this would be a good application for it. Never used it.

To the OP- watch the legs on those old chairs-- they give out pretty easily. I can't speak for the other sets of legs in this thread.

Agreed on the legs, they already look in pretty bad shape from the rust.

Edit: To keep it on topic, a front row viewer of a SS show might have sat in a chair like the OP's, but it would have been covered in plastic film.

Auto body shop and be done with it.

I've stripped about a dozen old metal porch chairs using a grinder with the steel wire brush attachment. Works great and doesn't take long at all. I'm not sure how much lead got in my bloodstream, but it's not something I plan on doing all the time so I really don't care.

The local powder coating shop sand blasts them and powder coats them in your chosen color for $40 a chair,he said it is his biggest thing now that people are looking for these old metal chairs at garage sales and craigslist. So see where the closest shop is and be happy w/not having to do anything other than pay for finished product.

I'd go with a chemical stripper

How attached are you to them? Those chairs are going for insane amounts right now. You could honestly probably sell the pair for over $100 right now without doing anything to them.

Just don't say anything about it to my wife.
