How long do you want to ignore this user?
Last summer my wife and I built our first house and the sod wasn’t laid very well. There were a bunch of bumps and it was very uneven. I almost felt like adding shocks and a suspension to my mower!

Well, I made a thread last summer and a few of y’all chimed in and I began doing my research. It was already July and the temps were high and we were already very dry, so I decided to postpone this project until next spring.

Fast-forward to this past March.
My B-I-L and I both had this same issue and we helped each other out spreading the top soil. We ended getting some Premium Top Soil (75% compost and 25% sand) from Silver Creek Material in Fort Worth. I had 6 total yards delivered for my 3,800 sq/ft of grass.

Here is the first picture before I spread out any of the Top Soil. My lawn was about 2.5” tall throughout the winter, so I needed to scalp it. You can see the shorter cut grass at the bottom of this picture. I ended up scalping it to about 1” tall or so

After I scalped the entire yard, I applied a heavy shot of fertilizer before the top soil was spread out. I wanted the fertilizer below the new dirt and close to the growing grass itself. After that, we spent about 8 hours spreading this stuff out. It took awhile, but we were able to get 90% of it done on one Saturday. After it was spread out, I hand watered it all in. I read online that it was better to hand water with a high pressure nozzle so the sand/compost could fall down below the grass blades. We used a big push broom and the back side of a garden rake to work it all in. Here’s what it looked like after the first water:

You can see in the last picture of my backyard where I applied the top soil too think. I had to go back to a few spots around my yard and rake up the thicker areas. The grass wasn’t able to grow through these spots.

Here is how it looked after 8 days. I watered it 2 times a day for the 2-3 week or so:

Here is the final product. I have mowed it twice already at a height of 0.5”. You can still see where a few of the really low spots were (places that I applied the soil too thick), but I will just add a little sand every week and work it into the grass. With time, it will raise up with the rest of the yard.

How much did the sand cost? I was thinking about doing something along these lines to my yard instead of completely regrading the whole yard.

not too shabby

Thanks y’all!

Atmhockey—sorry, I’m gonna have to pass! It took some good hard work, but worth it…only because it was MY yard.

tamu- the 6 yards of 75/25 blend cost me $249 (this included delivery). I think it was $25-30 per yard. Check out their website.

As far as just doing it with sand, I think there are Pro’s/Con’s.

PRO’s = easier to work with, cheaper price, and probably see results faster

CON’s = it offers no nutritional value at all to your yard (the compost blend would however)

OP - that looks great! I have this on my list of to-do's for my yard as well. Seems like lots of posters have had this problem. Mine occurred because there was a 2 day delay between grading the yard and laying the sod. You guessed it, big rain storm and lazy sod crew that just threw it down on the graded yard with all the run-off ruts. I didn't make it out till 3 or 4 days later and by that time I had no idea how bad the run-off ruts were under the sod.

I was going to have them pull it all up and re-grade and re-lay the sod, but I had already had them pull all the sod up the week before when they laid St. Augustine despite me requesting and paying for Bermuda.

What say you OP and other OB'ers? I've got Bermuda and live in College Station - you think it's too late to go ahead and do this this year?

Did you have drainage problems at all before or after?

Oh BTW, looks great! I bet you have a pretty big grin seeing the results of your hard work, or at least I would.

Dr_boogs-ya, that’s pretty much what I figured happened with my lawn. The sheets of Bermuda were not laid close together, so that made it even worse!

Redass— here are the dates:
March 16 – spread top soil mix (took first picture)
March 24 – took 2nd picture (8 days after)
April 16 – took latest pictures. So 1 month after I spread the soil and 24 days after the 8 day picture

Bob- no, I really didn’t have a drainage issue. The only questionable area is in my backyard. The backyard slopes like a “ V “ (the lowest portion in the middle of me backyard). My lawn (and all the lawns in our development) are sloped like this. It drains to the side yards between me and my neighbors and then down towards the streets. I didn't really change the slope, but just apply the same 0.25-0.5” thickness everywhere.
And yes, I definitely have been very happy with it! Many neighbors have already complained saying that their wives have asked them to do the same thing I did because they liked it so much.

Bottlerocket—thanks, I appreciate it! It's some form of Bermuda, but when I asked my builder what type, they had no idea. So I would imagine it’s the cheapest form …probably common Bermuda

Blane-thanks! I’m a redneck, but Hank Hill still has me beat!!! No propane accessories here

Redass—the time frame may have been closer if I had warmer weather up here in Fort Worth. We had 2 late freezes and cold fronts that made my yard grow pretty slow. If it was 60-80* the entire time after, I bet my yard would have looked ever better after 3-4 weeks.

Dr_boogs- if your lawn is growing pretty well in CS and not stressed due to heat yet, then yeah I’d say you would be good to go. Measure you entire lawn and find out how many square feet you have. Then calculate how many square feet of top soil is required to get you .25-.5” worth of top soil.

When you spread it, make sure you don’t cake it on there too thick (like I did in some areas). From what I learned, you want most of the grass blades to poke through the new soil. If they don’t, they might have a hard time growing through the soil/sand. I had to get my rake out once a week and re-work some spots that weren’t able to grow through.
always gig em

Guess you didn't wanna be a man and plant floratam st. Augustine but whatever.

Seriously, good job! Feels good knowing you did it yourself doesn't it? You'll always have the pride and satisfaction of knowing YOU did that.
