Rawhide making dog sick?

We gave my friend's dog a rawhide 3 days ago. That night, the dog had diarrhea. I felt bad and thought it would pass. Then the other dog got sick... We don't know if that dog chewed on the rawhide.

They're both medium sized dogs and they rawhide was gone by the end of the day.

3 days later the dog is still not 100%. What are the odds that it was the rawhide that made the dogs sick, or that they picked up a big somewhere?

I'm no professional but I've read horror stories about rawhide bones making dogs sick. I'd say talk to the vet. Better safe than sorry.

Rawhides are not good for dogs. They can't digest the processed skin, from my past experiences. I won't give them to my dog.

Some dogs can't handle a change in diet like that. I have a beagle that has eaten them her whole life and is 13 now with no problems, but she chews them rather than swallowing whole like some dogs. You have to realize that that hide is just a dehydrated beef cracklin', so for a dog that is not used to that, I'm sure it is very possible their bellies did a flop after the experience.

I've heard of rawhides causing issues, but I've personally never had a problem with them. Sadie doesn't get them very often though, and she doesn't eat them in one sitting either.

I've heard that they aren't good for the dogs, but my mutts have never had a problem with them.

I rarely give them one anymore, mostly because I can give each of the 3 their own bone, but they will act like the football players in the classroom in "The Program" and make their mission in life to go after only 1 bone until it is gone, then the next, then the next. And it is non-stop (to the point we have to hide the bones at night so the damned dogs will sleep).

Well it looks like everything is going to be ok.

I think we'll stick with treats made in the USA filled with the blood of infidels from now on! Amerrrica!

There have been dog treat recalls in the past for Salmonella contamination that was making dogs sick. I have no idea if that could be going on in this case.

I have heard lots of stories of rawhide making dogs sick and it happened to my dogs. We don't give them rawhide any more because of that. Only beef bones.

You think wolves wouldn't eat the hide or fat layers of their kills? Hell yes, they do. Their food is typically a lot less fatty than what we give them though. My dogs have generally always tolerated what I give them well.

Yes, but they aren't highly processed, cooked, bleached and subsequently kiln dried.

That's like saying a homegrown potato has the same nutritive value as a Lays potato chip.

Depends on the dog, how frequently they eat them, if they gnaw on them vs eat them quickly, and a few other things.

Some dogs handle them fine, but I've seen a few cases where a sharp edge on a quickly eaten rawhide actually causes a GI perf and a septic abdomen.

So in summary, most of the time they are ok (I don't give them to my dog), but some dogs can get major GI signs like vomiting and diarrhea or in the rare case a perforation.

GunRange,
Same thing happened to my dog. Never gave him another one.
