I'm a Shimano guy, so right now I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on a Stradic for inshore/flats.

Also interested in what YOU guys like and if anyone would reccomend something better/different. Never have used Diawa, not interested in Penn, like the Quantums but always associated them more w/ freshwater...

Budget is under $300.

TIA

Never used a spinning reel in saltwater. Always wondered about it though. I'm a baitcaster guy, but that also has a lot to do with the braided fishing line I use.

I have a Sahara, the cheapest Shimano spinning reel series that has the fully sealed ARB bearings. I've fought kingfish with it.

Shara for the money.

Or go big boy and buy a Stradic or whatever their top end is.

Big difference in price though.

You can do well (I do) with a PENN also.

I've got the Stradic Ci4 and would highly recommend it.

I'm a Stradic guy and big fan of them. But, don't overlook the Penn Battle. Very solid reel with a great drag. At only $100 they're a great value too.

i know your budget is alot larger then mine - BUT i really would consider the Okuma Trio spinning reel from academy. I am really hard on my equipment - and this is the ak47 of saltwater reels. $70

I started using the '3000' size for flats fishing. It is the size of the 2500, but has an upsized spool that fits more line. The 4000 is just too heavy for me now.

Spool it up with some braided line and you are good to go.

Shimano Sienna for bayfishing. The reel is so inexpensive it is disposable. I have had two for over 3 years, get them cleaned before the season begins and will throw them in the trash when bearings start to fail. After all, they only cost $25-$30 each!

^ you can do that. Or, fish with the same stradic for last 20 years. (i did change the bearings out last year though.)

On mouth and Finn's recommendation, I now own 2 sahara's. a 2500 and a 4000. Very happy with both.

I use Sustain 3000's on most of my bay rods and they work pretty well. The ci4 is a good reel as well.

Funny, I can't stand braid on baitcasters but love it on my spinning reels.

I have a stradic and love it. Fishing it on a 7' popping pole with braid and its got plenty of guts to horse big fish in.

I was always told that braid doesn't work well on spinning reels because it tends to develop memory. Never bought one because of that reason maybe I'm wrong though.

I have and use two Penn Slammers and love them. They work with Braided line great.

EFE, this is what I will be using it for; putting it on my 7' Allstar.

Always thought that was why they developed braid, for decreased memeory/stretch esp. when using a longer rod with longer casts i.e. inshore fishing. I use PowerPro on all my rods w/ a 2-3 foot flourocarbon leader. Best of both worlds!

Really surprised no Diawa peeps have chimed in yet...would be interested to try one out.

I've never had any memory issues with the powerpro I'm running on it or my other reels. And I've had the same line on it for about two years now, will probably change it out before this summer though.

R-money, what weight fluoro do you use as a leader and what knot to you use to attach it? I just switched to braid from mono.

Kjodie,

Depends, but for reds/specs I usually go with something in the 15-20# range. Personally I prefer two clinch knots tied to each other to connect leader to braid. As long as you clip the tag ends and the knot is clean it will go thru the guides of your rod without any issues.

That may have been the case years ago when braid first was introduced but it's certainly not the case now.

A modified Albright aka Alberto is quite a bit better than a Uni to Uni. I believe a J knot is also.

This is a good source if you ever want to check.

I have numerous Shimano Sonora 4000FAs and none have failed. Just keep them clean. About $50.

Knots are def not my strong suite, could use some practice. That J knot looks like a winner may have to try it sometime

Gracias. I've been looking for another Sahara 3000, but the 2500 is the same size body with just a little smaller spool. And I just so happen to have an extra 3000 spool for the Sahara so that will work out great.

Rod Riot is going on at academy right now as well, I believe.
