Rice bran

Rice Bran is only ~12% protein, and over ~15% fat. Do you actually use this?? Doesn't seem suited for deer. Whole Cottonseed is a great way, Alfalfa is another. However I've been told about gossypol problems with certain breeds of deer effecting fertility, with cottonseed. It all depends though, its rare. I personally prefer a finished feed protein supplement from a feed mill, because they'll add vitamins and micro-nutrients to the blend to ensure the deer gets it. May not be the " cheapest" but will pretty well guarantee the deer get everything they need nutritionally.

Regarding cottonseed, we're considering that for this year. Where can we get it in the Temple/Austin/Llano triangle? Any leads?

Anyone have a feed store on the east side of Houston they use or maybe the new waverly, Cleveland area. Looking to find a place to get protein for cheapest price and needing the power of the outdoor board.

Properly manage your habitat.

Cottonseed is not a good idea. Bad for deer. Rots when it gets moist. Gives deer constipation. Stay away from it. All of you.

Deer Antler Spray.

Properly managing the habitat isnt an option when the place you hunt at is primarily used as a cattle operation not a hunting outfit.

I do have fences around feeders to keep the cows out but the pastures the cows aren't allowed in serve as the hay pastures.

Livingston Feed in Livingston TX, and Southeast Texas Farm and Ranch in Raywood both deal Producers Coop feeds. They have a good 20% Deer Pellet.

Yes, I am pretty sure he was.

Back to the OP. the TPWD biologist for our region was telling several landowners in our subdivision that there is a solid (molasses based maybe) tub feed sold in certain feed stores that qualifies as protein for wildlife exemption purposes. Hogs and coons won't touch it and it lasts for months.

I was just kidding in my earlier comments. Can't let too many people in on cottonseed or it will be impossible to find and $600/ton in a couple years.

See. I told you guys. It's bad stuff. Your does will never have fawns again and your bucks will shoot blanks. Stick with protein pellets.

Just started Cottonseed. The deer took to it quickly, and post rut condition of bucks looking good thus far. We wll stay on until about september and then switch back to Lyssy & Echol.

We had a biologist come out and do some sampling of forbes, soil, etc. Sent the results to L&E and they now blend a pellet for us. The only additional cost was for testing of all samples.

txaggie02 knows what im talkin bout! cottonseed is like feeding your herd a slow acting cyanide that takes all libido out of the bucks at the same time!
