How long do you want to ignore this user?
Posted last week on travel board about possibly planning a trip to new mexico or colorado with the girlfriend. It looks like we're going to try and either go to the gunnison/crested butte area or estes (possibly both). I would like to plan for us to go white water rafting. We used Noah's Ark rafting company and ran the arkansas river when I went with my church. Just looking for any other reccomendations any of y'all might have.

Also, it seems a lot of places I have looked at require big groups. How difficult would it be for just us two to find a group to maybe partner up with so we could actually go?

It has been a long time since I did it, but my then GF & I went to one of the outfitters in town and signed up for the next day. This was in Breckenridge and we rafted the Arkansas.

I don't think you'll have any problems finding one to let 2 people on.

I used Clear Creek Rafting Co. in Idaho City, Co. Nice trip. Relatively easy, some small class IVs iirc.

1. It is Idaho Springs, not Idaho City. And that is not a very good place to go for rafting, maybe the closest to Denver but would not recommend.

2. If you want rafting go to Buena Vista. Many good outfitters their. I like Buffalo Joes, we have had good luck with guides there. In my opinion a good guide makes all the difference.

It has been probably 10 years since I went white water rafting. We went to Buena Vista, and used Buffalo Joes. We did the full day trip and it was lots of fun.

If I remmeber right, we did the same thing. Rafted the Arkansas, about 8 to a raft, 2500CFS. It was a blast. We even had 2 people tossed out of the raft once.

Did a full-day trip with Wilderness Aware Rafting in Buena Vista last summer and had a great time! Also went ziplining with Captain Zipline in Salida and had a blast.

Probably going up this summer. Rafting is tops on list.

There's only 2 rafting routes near Gunnison or Almont. One is a fairly difficult run and it's only open early summer/late spring when the snow is melting the most.

The other is the Taylor river coming down from Taylor Park (split at Almont when heading to Crested Butte from Gunnison). We rafted this last summer. It's not very difficult (category III).

Your best and long distance rafting in Colorado is the Arkansas near the royal gorge/canon city/salida area. From there you can head over Monarch pass to go to Gunny or Crested Butte. You can also head up to Buena Vista and make it over to Aspen/Breck if the roads are open.

We'd be going during the first two weeks of may so finding someone doing trips that early is the hard part. Buffalo joes didn't start until the 19th

Mid melt, the water is colder and it is REALLY flowing if they've had a good snow season.

There isn't going to be much rafting that early in May, most outfitters won't have even started their guide schools at the point.

Having been in the whitewater industry for a decade I'd go with AVA or River Runners. River Runners has a royal gorge office down that way.

I personally would stay away from Noah's Ark, weird weird staff rules.

I went once in July in Colorado, somewhere near Vail. The water is cold then, so don't pick a time thinking its going to be warm.
