I’ve been stashing a few rod/reels in the corners of my garage and wanted to find a way to get them out of my way. Mainly, I wanted them moved so I wouldn't accidentally break off any eyelets on them.
So, I decided to mount them on the ceiling of my garage. I don’t use them every weekend, so it’s not a big deal to get a ladder out to reach them. I made one similar to this in the past, but the ceiling weren’t too tall and I could get a folding chair or stand on my tippy-toes to reach them. Now, I have 12’ ceiling in my garage and need a ladder. But I don’t mind. Instead of mounting these horizontally on the ceiling, you could do it vertically on the side of your garage.
I bought 4 -1x4x8. (about $8 at Home Depot)
-marked the center on two of the 1x4’s and put a chalk line down the entire board
-marked every 3”. So, ever foot had 4 marks.
-Drilled pilot holes where I just marked.
-Then, for every other hole, I drilled all 2” circle cut outs. Skipping every other hole
-After I drilled the 2” holes, I drilled 2 ½” holes (on the ones I skipped).
-The 2” holes are meant for the small end of the rod and the 2 1/2” side is for the bigger end (the handle). Just make sure you switch off on the other piece of wood. If you start with the 2” on one piece of 1x4, make sure you start with the 2 ½” on the opposite 1x4. You don’t want them to be matching, but rather opposite.
-Then, I mounted the 1x4’s with the holes to another 1x4. Screwed the two together perpendicularly (make a “T”).
-I wanted to go ahead and make it look nice, so I put a coat of paint on it.
-Now, just screw it to the wall/ceiling and make sure you hit your studs. I spaced mine out about 36” apart. I also decided to mount mine above the garage door, so once it goes up and my garage is open, then they are kinda hidden. Not that I have a bunch of money tied up in my gear…I just liked the idea I guess
Pretty simple project. Great father/son/weekend project.
If you have a drill press, it goes by much faster! If you just had a regular drill, then it might take just a little longer.
