I enjoy plinking around with a cheapo Ruger .22lr. Would a .22 - 250 be similar but just with a little more punch ? or is there a big difference between how the two guns shoot ?
What is the typical magazine size on a .22 - 250 semi auto. ?

There is a big difference between a .22 LR and a .22-250

One is a rimfire, with velocities around 1000-1300 fps.

The other is a very fast shooting center fire, with velocities that can exceed 4000fps.

Are you want something to plink with that has more umph than the .22LR? .22Magnum or .17HMR would be a good alternative if you want to stick with rim fire. I would say anything in .223 Remington would be a better center fire option for plinking than the .22-250.

Also as the guy below me said, I'm not sure if there are many semi-auto .22-250 platforms out there.

Showing that the Browning BAR was chambered in it at some time.

That BAR in 22-250 is going to be expensive.

22-250 is a high velocity varmint round that can be used up to white tail deer.

The step up round is a 22mag. You could also check out 22 hornet.

ok, so if I want semi-auto then .22-250 is out. I should be looking at .22 magnum ? I thought .17 HMR was a pellet gun ? I like the Ruger .22lr, I just want more in case of hogs or coyotes. Maybe I should be moving toward a .30 - .30 lever action.

Sounds to me like the .223 is the round you are looking for.

FTW

.223 or 5.56x45mm is a far more flexible and affordable cartridge than .22-250 in terms of the number of rifles and types of rifles (evil black ones or the less threatening wood stock bolt guns) chambered for it.

Suggestion to the OP is to read up a little bit on what you are getting into. You'll be able to make better decisions. This forum is a great resource as well, but you're getting it in bits and pieces while we try and figure out what your ultimate goals are. Below is one website and there are hundreds (1000's really) where you can probably learn in a few days what we learned a bit at a time over many years.

What Flattscatter said.

Do some research to familiarize yourself with the different calibers and the possible applications you are wanting.

Thanks for the advice. Quickly looking around, I see several interesting Henry Rifles. My favorite is the pump action .22magnum rifle. It looks like a skunk's worst nightmare.
