I have a used Remington 870 12 Ga that was given to me for Xmas. It has two barrels, the field barrel with swappable chokes and the rifled slug barrel. I will be using it for slug deer hunting, turkey hunting possibly and home protection.

I want to find a replacement stock to help reduce the recoil, as I have a slight tear in one of my rotator cuffs. For this reason, my other shotgun is a 20ga.

I've done some research and have narrowed my search down to the below 3 stocks. Does anybody have any experience with these and the amount of recoil they have? Are there other stocks (don't wan the gas absorber ones as they are too high out of my price range) that would be worth looking into?

Sims vibration labs has a replacement buttpad for the 870. I think it's called the R3?

It really helps for something like $20.

I have the ShurShot stock on my 870 SuperMag and it really seems to soak up the recoil of 3.5" turkey loads. (If that is even possible) I also enjoy the heck out of the pistol grip, although it's more than a PITA if you try to use the gun for wingshooting.

Chemist, thanks for the heads up. I will definately keep that in mind if I want to trim my budget down. The current stock is kinda beat up so probably gonna get a complete stock.

WC, thanks for the input. I don't plan on shooting birds on the wing. I have my 20ga for dove hunting. So I'm thinking the pistol grip should do well.

I'm a fan of the Knoxx Specops adjustable stock. There is a recoil reducing version as well.

Blue, looks like the reviews on the Knoxx are pretty good as far as recoil. Do you have one on a gun?

I've shot a friends 870 with one and really liked it and it had a noticeable impact on recoil.

I am actually trying to find one for a 20ga in the non recoil reducing version but they stopped making them.

Ark, have you seen anything about the stock mounting plate sometimes breaking on the ATI stock? A few of the reviews mention it breaking or screws stripping. However I usually figure the few odd ball reviews like that tend to be people that have no clue of what they are doing.

No, I haven't. My dad has used them with success and great feedback with several clients (he's a gunsmith), and I just helped a friend install his on an old 870 he just converted to a hd weapon.

Was the install pretty easy? Sounds like it should be.

It should be - the hardest part is probably getting off your old stock. You'll need a long, skinny flat (I think) screwdriver to take out the screw in the stock, and you'll have a funny nut on the foreend you may have to deal with.

You can buy the special tool for about $20, you can make one yourself by using a dremel or something to cut a couple of notches in a piece of pipe, or you can use anything from a pair of pliers to a butter knife.

Well, I ordered the ATI from Mounting Solutions Plus and surprise, it's on backorder. I've canceled that order after looking on ATI's webpage and seeing they have it in desert tan. I've ordered that one now, hopefully it gets shipped and not stuck in back order land.
