So, I'm debating about optics on my AR and figured I'd throw it out here for discussion.

My WW HBC has a detachable carry handle, but I think I want to leave it on with optics.

So I am considering a few options:

1) Just mounting on top of the carry handle with a variable power scope.

2) Going with a cMore scout w/ reflex sight attached to carry handle

3) Forget the cary handle all together and get a scope and a flip-up rear sight for back-up

4) Other suggestions??

Option 3 for sure. Your scope will be more securely mounted and at proper eye level.

So w/ option #3 what would be a good optic recommendation? (Trying to assist OP not hijack thread)

Also rec on flip up backup sight

Option 4: sell it to Ash for a reasonable price.

But if I had to choose? Option 3.

I went with option 3 on my AR that had a handle; a magpul buis looking through my red dot glass with a fixed front iron site.

I am in this same situation. I bought a red dot and the carry handle mount, but have thought about getting rid of the handle all together and using the red dot on a raised mount. I am not sure, however, that the backup sight would be high enough to see through the red dot on a raised platform. The fixed front sight really is a pain for me with a red dot.

Why can't you set up the red dot for a lower 1/3 cowitness? That would at least get your dot up and over the iron sights.

Let me rephrase what I said. I have the red dot, and if I put it on the raised platform with the hole through the middle, I don't know if a backup rear sight would be too high to see through that hole.

Interesting that everyone seems to be advocating for option 3. I was leaning towards Option #2 myself, although that wouldn't really allow for any magnification.

Still interested in opinions, and stories, so keep em coming.

I have option 2 and like it. Very light.

I had a bushmaster with an A2 upper with a Trijicon TA01 mounted on it. Worked wonderful, and had no issues with the height. That being said I do like the flattop and prefer that.

Bigfoot - do you mean you want to put the optic on a mount that has a hole in it so you can look through the mount itself to line up your irons?

Yes, with the red dot on the flattop, it is behind the front iron. Not even a 1/3 cowitness. I am not sure if the BU sight would be too high to see thru the hole in the raised mount for the red dot

if the red dot is mounted even with the front sight why not just look through the glass of the red dot and line your rear BUIS that way? no need to use the peephole in the mount.

I guess I'm having a hard time figuring in my head how high the mount puts the red dot.

Post a picture like the second one with the two irons lined up but with the red dot on...

I don't have a backup rear sight right now, so that is gonna be hard

I believe that a co-witness requires the rear sight.

You want to make it so when your irons are aligned they point in the exact same place as your red dot

In case anyone was interested in how my little setup looks at the moment.

Option 3

...or KISS (irons only).

I think I have an irrational fear of getting rid of the carry handle. I think I am still leaning towards the reflex scout site.

What is the purpose of the handle? None of my guns have handles and I never have a problem carrying them... the way the handle is, it seems like it would be difficult to transition from carrying to shooting

Deats, thanks for sharing!

I'm thinking of going towards something like this (without the flashlight and forward grip):

Can't decide if the red dot looks too funny up there as opposed to the reflex sight.
