Basic--if it is a "game species" under the purview of TPWD, it can't be sold. Any of the exotics are livestock and can be sold (someone else will have to chime in on any potential technicalities).

There are stores that sell whitetail meat under he guise that it is from out of state. Whether or not this is true I don't know but the processor I use here in town sells some.

Most of the venison sold in stores in things like sausage and jerky is red deer captive raised.

So I can raise a here of Axis (exotic, not under TPWD) and sell that meat legally.

I'm sure there are some meat inspection hoops to go through.

There aren't many arguments I win with him, but he couldn't believe they sell "pork and venison" links at the grocery store.

They don't sell pork and venison sausage. They sell pork sausage, you get the venison for free.

Yeah most states from what I understand won't allow you to sell what you hunt, they don't want to encourage commercialization or poaching, as well as make sure food sold to the public meets health standards.

Ofn, the venison in the pork and venison sausage is red deer. Since it is exotic, they can sell all they want.

I understand that, but if you pay a processor to make you sausage, you're paying for everything but the venison (labor excluded).

Yes...correct. I was referring to packaged for retail stuff like the Chappell hill pork and venison sausage.
