Our GSD started limping yesterday. Today she went in for x-rays and the vet says she broke her toe (front paw). He basically said keep her in a crate and no exercise/walking for 6 weeks.

Anyone had to deal with this? She is very active, not sure how 6 weeks of no activity will go.

Slowly, and full of guilt.

Was a splint or some such not an option? Would she just chew that off?

Plates & screws are the only option. Go nuclear.

Its the first joint on an outside toe.

Split was an option but thought it would cause more irritation of skin and joints and may cause issues with her gait.

Screws were an option but vet said they often come loose or come out.

Really sucks, this dog is a badass athlete, you can tell she is depressed.

Sorry to hear, tough to keep active/working dogs cooped up.

One of my GWPs broke his dew claw labor day weekend and had to keep him inactive for 6 weeks. Crate time is about all you can do.

Sucks that it happened this time of year

Dr boogs the vet didn't give us the X-rays. All we know is it's front left paw, first joint on her inside toe (pointer finger if dogs had one). We noticed her limping and it points sharply to right. My wife didn't see any obvious crack in the X-ray when the vet showed her, but the vet was sure it was broken.

Is six weeks of crate rest sufficient? Any negative effects to just allowing it to heal crooked without pins or splinting? Once healed do we need to be concerned about it re-breaking easily?

No problem squirrel I knew you were joking.

First joint from the ground or first joint from the rest of the foot? Is the affected joint dislocated or was one of the bones actually broken? Post a pick of the foot with her weight bearing. If it's too painful to bear weight, post a photo of the foot from the front with the affected toe clearly visible. Is the toe-nail intact or was it pulled off as well?

Thanks dr boogs, first joint from the ground, Vet said it was fractured but my wife didnt see any cracks on the x-ray (or dislocation). Nail is intact
