Hunting with a 1911

I caught a hunting show the other night with a guy named Razor Dobbs. I hate that the show seems to be scripted so much for TV (like the show with Benny Spies), but found it curious that he was hunting hogs with a 1911. So, that got me pondering adding shooting a hog (and maybe a deer at some point) with a 1911 to the ol' bucket list. I mean, it's gotta be more challenging than a crossbow, right?! (Bazinga!)

Your thoughts, oh wonderful OB...?

(Is a 1911 even considered a "legal firearm" by TPWD?)

*Edit for spelling.

Why not, shot placement would be key of course.

I plan on shooting one with my .41 mag revolver in a few weeks.

Said Kimber 10mm in the trigger thread is in my hunting bag. If a deer comes within bow range in rifle season, it's gonna get a centimeter of lead.

I killed a die last year with my .41 and it worked great, I have also killed a hog or two with my 1911 as stated above all about shot placement. Oh and expect them to run like they weren't even hit if you shoot them behind the shoulder.

Killed two with my suppressed HK USP45 one evening after climbing down out of a bow stand.

Both hit in the ear at about 15-16 yards. The second one stood there and looked at the first one like "whats wrong with you?" when he just crumpled when the 230 grain ball round scrambled his grey matter. Same shot on the second one.

It was pretty funny.

Chicken fried rabbit compliments of my (former) Rock Island 45 last January. Tasty!

Two hogs down with my M1927-A1...one heart shot, one head shot.

The 45 was intended to kill horses, so it would probably work just fine.

I think the 10MM is considered OK for whitetail.

A Coonan, loaded w. buffalo bore ammo gets quite zippy, and that would, probably, work very well.

I have a 460 Rowland on order, which, I'm sure, would be adequate for whitetail, pigs, etc.

I'd go with 10mm or a revolver .357 and up. In hunting situations (as opposed to slaughtering) penetration is key to getting the humane kill. I just dont think, from my research the .45 has the energy.

I have killed several hogs with my .357 mag. They are fun to sneak up on and kill with a pistol. Not sure I would try it with a deer.

I thought it was designed to kill Moros.

They have apparently traded in their Kris. . .

.45 ACP +P rounds are pretty comparable to 10mm rounds in terms of energy.

At 25 yards, with a good projectile and good shot placement, you will be fine. Don't expect the hollywood action scene with the deer though - odds are it's going to run a bit.

If a good shot will take down a pig at 20 yards, it should do the same on a deer. Especially a Texas deer.

Accuracy is certainly key here, but I can't imagine that one of the most preferred rounds for shooting humans wouldn't be suitable for shooting a doe.

Challenge accepted!

*ETA: I'm obviously talking about .45 ACP...

It is easily doable. As mentioned above round size and shot placement are key.

A few years back I killed a mule deer with my Ruger P94 chambered in .40S&W. Its not a big gun at all. I think the barrel is 3.5" long. Perfect shot placement behind the shoulder with a 180 grain Black Talon. It hopped about 3 times and fell over. Shot was about 35 yards.

I pretty much did it on a dare and it was not a big buck either, but it was the last day of the season and we were not seeing much that day and I was the only one hunting Mulies at the time. And wouldn't you know it, about 45 minutes later as we were headed back to camp, we came across a really nice buck bedded down under a mesquite 20 yards from the road! Me & the two guys with me could do nothing since we had all filled our tags for the year.
