WTF?

Why get a Florida CHL?
As licensed Texas CHL instructors, we feel that obtaining a Florida non-resident CHL is a much better value than a Texas CHL. Why? First, you DO NOT need to be a Florida resident. Any qualified Texas resident can apply for and receive a Florida non-resident CHL. The Florida license is honored in Texas and 29 other states.

The primary advantage is the shorter training time required. A Florida non-resident CHL requires only 4 hours of classroom training, no range qualification and no written test. The license is good for 7 years with no class needed to renew. Our class includes all the necessary classroom instruction, application packet, completion certificate, passport photographs and document notary.

I think that is actually correct. You can show a certificate of firearm accuity.

Actually, you can carry under some restrictions in 35 other states.

As active duty military I did not have to undergo additional training to qualify for a Florida CHL and with an advance appointment they offer one stop CHL licensing appointments at the regional offices. As I recall it cost $116 including the fingerprinting on site. They told me to allow six weeks for the license to arrive by mail but it arrived in under two weeks.

In addition to handguns, a Florida CHL also allows you to carry on your person (within the borders of the state) pepper spray, stun guns, tasers, batons, baseball bats, or just about any other item that could be used as a personal defensive weapon except for nuclear, biological, or lethal chemicals.

Quite a few states don't recognize non-resident permits. I expect Texas to go that route in the next legislative session due exactly to "CHL Instructors" like the one quoted in the OP.

It was already brought up during the last legislative session.

No thanks. If I'm going to send money to a state governing agency it's going to be a TEXAS state governing agency. Why in the world would I want to send my money Florida? Just so I can avoid a few hours of training? Those people should have their Texas CHL Instructors license taken away for promoting a Florida license over a Texas license.

Also, as noted above, I've heard talk of Texas not honoring non-resident permits in the future for this very reason.

You're a Texan. Support Texas.

I have my Texas CHL. However, I would get a dual CHL, if I could carry in Nevada.

People used to do this in Texas with Utah non-resident CHLs. But Utah has shut down that loophole. If you are a Texas resident, get the Texas CHL. Don't be penny wise, pound foolish.

While I support CHLs, I'd like.people actually carrying concealed to have undergone SOME training with the freakin' weapon.

I've been waiting on Texas legislators to do a lot of things that are supposed to be done "in the next session"

My Dad is a WA resident, has property in Texas, did his research, and got the Utah CHL at the first of the year.

Had no idea that Utah was no longer offering this.

he must have a CHL in his own state to get a Utah CHL. If he got it before the law came into effect, when he renews, he will have to have a CHL in his own state.

he does, he has a WA CHL.

It's amazing to me that a very left leaning state like WA has a CHL that is much more easy to obtain than Texas.

This issue is real enough that the NRA-ILA was sending out notices last year.

The campus carry bill that made it the furthest last session was actually limited to Texas resident CHL holders specifically due to the Utah permit issue. It isn't a non-issue and it is on the minds of legislators.

A couple other reasons to get the Texas CHL:

-I can't quickly find the reference online, but IIRC, only resident CHL permits in states that require a background check are exempt from the Federal Gun Free School Zone law.
-You are not exempt from the NICS background check when buying/transferring a gun from a FFL unless you have a resident CHL.

Just get the Texas CHL ...

This is absurd. Being certified to teach something doesn't make one a disciple.

If they're urging people to get a Florida CHL in order to get around Texas CHL requirements then I don't think they should be allowed to make money teaching Texas CHL classes. If you think that's absurd then so be it. It's just MY opinion.

I got a Florida Non-res CHL. I got it because at the time (many years ago), Alabama didn't except a Texas CHL. I was traveling to Florida and didn't want to drive around AL or take the chance and drive through. Alabama excepted the Florida CHL. Fairly easy process as Florida is a "Shall Issue" state.

When pulled over by LEO, is officer informed of your Texas chl if you have one? Same with Florida chl?

What is legal BAC while carrying?

I actually detest the "no qualification" part of that... and the "shorter education" period too.

Having taken the Texas CHL course, I am frankly scared of some people "allowed" to carry in Texas. I got muzzle swept twice during quals, and saw three people take a gun directly from the Taurus paper box, having just bought it at Academy the day before. They had no clue.

I shot 246/250, intentionally tanking two rounds.

In fact, I'll go a step further. I shot a USPSA match last week with my sister. Watching some of those folks handle their firearm while moving was downright scary. At least 3 should have been DQ'ed for breaking 180 with a loaded firearm. And they carried it like they were scared.

my thought on this is that the TX certification is so easy...why would you want to skimp out even more on something for such a weighty responsibility?

The best benefit of the TX classroom is the shoot/no shoot and the "what's allowable" and finally pounding it into your head that whatever you put down range, you own that chip.

i have a nonresident FL CHL. i was still living in FL when i initially got my original CHL. when i moved back home to TX, i didn't feel the need to go through the entire process again, so i just filed as a nonresident of FL when it was time for renewal. it has nothing to do with supporting my home state. if it's reciprocated, who cares?

There is no legal limit. Even if you blow .001 you can be arrested.

Quagmire, thanks for the response.

Anyone know the answer to my first two questions?
