The heavy metal side of our metal shop can get very slow at times. I want to keep them busy and thought they could build some basic steel targets. Thing is, I just don't know what the market is for them, or channels to sell them. Any sites I should check out to get ideas and prices?

Thanks OB.

What type of steel? AR 400 or 500 are what most people sell. Guy on Ebay sells them. I might buy a set of steel plates in various sizes to add to what I already have.

Maybe a torso sized one for long range use.

What would you cut them with? I've heard that using plasma or torch to cut the AR500 will weaken the outside thus making them not so resistant. I'm no expert though!!!

Yep, using anything hot is going to mess up the AR400/500 steel heat treating. Water jet is the preferred method for cutting but a lot of places still plasma/torch cut. Any welding of brackets or cutting holes into them won't be ideal as well.

As for selling them there's ebay and a number of gun forums. I'm going to be in the market for a number of steel targets in the next couple of months as well.

I prefer 2 holes cut in the top of the plate for mounting them to hanging stands. I don't care if they're plasma cut, but torch will leave rough edges. No bueno.

Best steel targets we found are old blind flanges. Even a 150 class took a .50BMG at 100 yards without a puncture.

Problem is, they are expensive new, and old ones typically go for refinish. They're heavy as hell too.

One of the few perks of being in construction. I usually have access to all different sizes of blind flanges. That's what I used on my range in AZ (ductile iron), and they worked like a charm.

And were free, which is the best part of the whole deal.

I'd be interested at the right price. 10"-12" circles with 2 holes at top for hanging...

I purchased a 10" circle of AR 500 from a guy at a Market Hall gun show earlier this year. It has beed great all summer. I would be interested in something, maybe a larger one or a pig-shaped one.

Also, google Silhouette shooting. There are a few different designs (rooster, pig, etc), I'm sure there is a market for these. Also, look into Cowboy Action shooting, I think they use playing card symbols (club, spade, heart, diamond).

Some heavy metal dominos would be pretty awesome if you are looking for suggestions other than targets.

They would be cool, I'll put it on the list.

Updates coming Wednesday, metal shop manager is out of the office tomorrow.

Personally, I hated the power ballad trend of the very late 80's and was glad when grunge killed it off.

I would be interested. It is the shipping costs that always make me click cancel when contemplating ordering online.

There is always a market for cowboy action silhouettes and rifle/pistol silhouettes.

I sell AR 400 / 500 Plate and could work up a deal on some rems if interested. We can even cut per drawing. Don't worry about the heat effected zone on the plates. We use a hi-def plasma machine that cuts insanely fast and after the parts are done you can pick them up with your bear hands. We have a $250.00 minimum order charge on cut parts so cutting more than a few would be recommended or just purchase the rems and burn them on your own.

What would that torso target cost in 3/8" AR 500?

TexAg0308, write me at username @hotmail.com if you could. I'm looking to buy around 12 plates and not too picky on size/shape so if I could get a deal on rems that'd be great.

Bear hands! Nice one!

On another note I need more to go on that drawing. The Vertical and Horizontal dimensions are nice but we would need all of the dimensions to correctly figure the cost.

E mail sent as requested.

I can't speak for tx4guns but it seems like the other dimensions wouldn't be that critical. I'd guess the "head" needs to be 6-8 inches wide and about as tall. Split the difference to center it and what else do you need?
lexofer

Here's your standard IPSC target dimensions in centimeters that many makers use to build steel targets. Another popular size is to leave out the "D" zone so the overall size is about 1' x 2'.

I'd be in for one. I don't know anything about them though. I'd want it to be able to withstand a .338 lapua mag.

Make them the right size to fit in the "Flat Rate boxes" I have shipped some heavy crap in those. I mean like anvil heavy.

YOu could make an articulated torso and ship it for $14.95 anywhere.

1/2" AR500 is all you need for .338 Lapua.
