I seemed to have temporarily lost my buck knife and am in the market for a new knife. Will take any suggestions.

Keep an eye on Camofire.com. They have decent knives at decent prices on there a few times each week.

I have a gerber gator that has served me well for years, it almost feels weird quartering a deer with any other knife.

Easy to replace the blade so no worries about sharpening.

Well, the Buck folder is a good 'un.

I also recommend you look at the Benchmade 551 Griptilian - it's a folder also, great blade, and has a clip - which I've grown quite fond of. I carry it every day. http://www.benchmade.com/products/551

If you are looking for fixed blade, there are tons of options, just post if you would like a few links.

May two favorite knives are from Dozier and Van Sickle, both custom knife makers.

Look for something with a flat spine so you can use the tip as a zipper, good belly curve for skinning, and a blade that is 3.5-5.5" long. Big blades look cool until you start trying to use them.

Knives of Alaska makes some great stuff in D2 steel. D2 and ATS34 is what a lot of the custom knife makers use because of the balance between edge retention and ease of resharpening.

My David Winston in S30V right now. Might go with one of his skinners. I'm on Gene Ingram's waiting list.....should be up at the end of this year.

Jason has some nice blades too, I like the EDC myself with weathered Elk.

Yeah I like that EDC but I like David's offerings overall a little better for my needs.
I think Gene's are finished a little better and thinner in the grip.
I've had an Ingram on order since June of last year but with David's recent price increase it makes the Ingram that much sweeter. No flies on either Winston's knives though. Jason's are prolly the best value of all of 'em.

I'll second the Gerber Gator. You can get it with or without the gut hook. It's a nice folder and at $35 a good value.

Looks like Jason trained under Gene Ingram. Just like Charles May...who also makes a good knife.

Jason and Gene trained under Jason's dad David. I'm not sure if Gene or David trained Charles but I think David trained him too.

Buck 105 "Pathfinder". Pathfinder is in parenthesis because when I got it as a gift in the late 70's, I don't think it had that name. But it is a 105. Has cleaned countless deer and hogs.

I also have a Puma of about the same size with a stag handle from the same time frame, that was given to me by a good friend of my father, who is deceased who was like an uncle to me. I want to pass that one on to my son, and am afraid to take it to the field. Beautiful knife.

Heck, he will get them both, but the Puma is a safe queen.

The Havalon knives look pretty interesting. And reasonably priced. I just ordered one.

Knives of Alaska are made at a foundry here in Austin.

Case Trapper, got to keep it simple. All these new knife designs, you got one for skinning, one for cape skinning, one for quartering, hell, i've even seen a tool for reeming out the butt hole. There hasn't been an animal in all my years i haven't been able to butcher up head to toe start to finish with my Case Trapper. Now if only i didn't lose em every now and then i'd probably have about 10-12 at home.

I agree OldSalyAg...

I've got a caping knife, a drop point, and a camp knife for hacking on stuff and cutting up taters and onions for the skillet.

I do keep a backup skinner and a Fillet knife as well.

Also, i am a fan of fixed blades only. When it is cold and you can't feel your hands, I like to know the knife isn't going to buckle or close on me.

Good ol' Ka-Bar like the Marines used in WWII. Pretty damn hard to beat. American made too.

The ontario 499 beats a kabar as a survival knife IMO. I wouldn't use either regularly for hunting though.
