I am wanting to purchase a new hog rifle, probably an AR platform. i have been leaning towards one in 6.8 SPC, but am now considering .308. I like the idea of a lighter rifle in the 6.8 SPC but I don't reload so i am a little concerned about its availability. I would also like to keep the spending below $1,500. I was looking at bison armory and ARP for the 6.8. what brand (in that price range) do you recommend for .308s, if that is your preference?

I have 6.8 uppers if you are interested. Email in profile. They drive tacks. Super lightweight.

Ammo is not a big concern if you are only going to hunt with it. A box or two will last you a good while unless you have some really good hunting spots. 6.8 is a great round. Understand its limitations as a 300 yard and under round and it will serve you well.

If you see it as a plinking, SHTF or training rifle then ammo is an issue, and a big one. For stockpiling ammo, or shooting a lot you are better off with a .308.

Tx4guns send you an email last night. Just double guessing myself before I drop this kind of cash.

308 ammo is more common and will hit harder than a 6.8

6.8 is lighter

I handled my friend's DPMS bull barrel in 308, and it was very heavy IMO. Killed my desire to own one.

The 6.8 does well out of shorter (16") barrels, due to its modest case capacity and design. I personally prefer the 18-20" for reduced muzzle blast and slightly better performance.
The 6.8 with the Barnes bullets of 95-110 grains is a reliable, potent piece for piggies and deer. I use the 90gr Speer TNT for everything else (paper or varmints).

I dont understand why people insist on bull barrels on .308 semi's. You are not using a semi-auto to get the last .1 MOA out of the round like you might on a bolt gun. I have a good friend who has connected in AFG at 1250 with a light contour 18" .308 (first shot) with M118.

My handbuilt .308 that I have posted pics of here before started out as a DPMS stainless bull that I have shortened to 17.5 inches and turned down to basicaly an SPR profile. Handles great and shoots .75" groups all day long. Benny Hill and the other guys running .308's in 3 Gun run even lighter contour barrels and they shoot just as well.

You may get a little POI shifting as the barrel heats on a 20-30 round stage, but they still bang steel out to 600 everytime. Lighten those barrels up guys, and use the rifle for the advantages the action type brings, and quit thinking you are running a self-loading Surgeon. (Because you aint...)

Also consider that with a 6.8, you're still talking about an ar15 vs .308=ar10.

Ar10's are significantly more expensive, parts are expensive and very hard to find, they're heavier, you do not have the flexibility of changing barrels or uppers to shoot other calibers, and you are very limited on accessories.

Tx4guns is a good guy and will take care of you. I have an ar10 and love the .308, but if I could only have one, I would choose an ar15 platform hands down. Owning an ar10 just for wanting to shoot .308 is not worth it...

I can vouch for the accuracy of those 6.8 uppers.

Hold on a minute... AR10 platforms can too support different calibers.

Off the top of my head you can run .260, .243, 6.5 creedmoor, and even the Rem 300 SAUM. If that's not flexibity I don't know what is!

You're very right; I was meaning the same flexibility of the ar15. The variety of ar15 calibers is astonishing, but it is very limited for the ar-10
