Obviously by my handle I'm from Montana. Learned how to fly fish growing up on the Yellowstone, Gallatin, Jefferson, Madison and little secret creeks in the park.

I've been in Texas for four years and forgot about fly fishing. Came to Colorado for the summer brought my rod and fell back in love with it. I'm moving back to finish my degree in a couple weeks. Are there any places to fly fish in the BCS area or am I sol?

If so.. obviously fish are bigger and different than the trout I'm used to, any advice for a northerner in Texas?

Around BCS? No, not that I'm aware of. You might find some bass or perch that would hit a popping bug in the Bush Library pond.

There is some fun fly fishing out in the hill country, but just about all of that is going to be 3+ hrs west of BCS. I have fly fished a lot on the Llano and I've heard the Blanco and San Marcos can be good. You would be going after bass and perch on these rivers. Different than trout but still fun. Fish will mostly be under 12" but there are some pigs to be had. Some of the other "rivers" like the San Gabriel can be fun to go after white bass (aka sand bass) in the spring.

They do release trout in some Texas rivers with the Guadalupe being the most well known. It can be ok if you know what you're doing or go with a guide. Probably would just be a huge disappointment for someone like yourself.

My suggestion - check out salt water fly fishing. You're going to need to drive a significant distance to find any fly fishing opportunities anyway, so why not go to the coast? There you will have many different species and much larger fish. Lots of good fishing on the Texas coast.

I strictly fly-fish the bays. Nothing like sightcasting and fighting an upper slot red!

Montana.

Anywhere their are fish you can catch them on a fly rod. Not generally in the heat of summer, but they can be caught.

I would target largemouth bass in the lakes and ponds around BCS this fall when water cools off some.

As mentioned, Guadalupe below Canyon dam. Also, spring whites bass run on creeks and lakes above reservoirs Feb. through April. Colorado Bend State Park is ideal for this.

You can flyfish at any pond around that has sunfish and bass. It can be very productive with foam bugs with rubber legs, etc...or you could stick with traditional attractor flies and tear up the sunfish.

During the spring you can do well with popper type flies while wading at Lake Sommerville for sand bass.

At one time TPWD stocked trout in the Blanco and the Guadalupe below the dam.

Montana I love trout fishing and go to colorado every year, but trout in texas are my least favorite fish to fly fish for. Much better quarry that hatchery trout or trout on the guad IMO.

I have caught largemouth, smallmouth, hybrids, sandies, redfish, crappie, stripers all on the fly.

try to find a local fly club to learn about local fishing.

a couple of guides I would recommend.

labs, it's a shame you don't have longer arms so you could make that bass look REALLY big.

FF99: it's a roadtrip.

I'm going wherever there is some decent upland bird hunting or good flyfishing. Will probably be in Montana for at least 2 weeks, and might extend it.

Have shotgun, flyrod, Llewellyn setter, tent, campstove, Aire raft, and 4wd pickup; Will travel.
