Got an email from cutco showing a new hunting knife that they are coming out with. Its their drop point knife with a gut hook on it. Comes in Double D or straight edge. I both the skinning knive and the regular drop point in staight edge. Was thinking on buying this knew knife for my father's birthday. Has anyone had any experience with their hunting knives with the double d edge. I love my straight edge knives because I can sharpen them when I need to. My understanding is the double d's need to be sent back like there other sereated edged knives. By the way the price on the gut hook drop point is $100 according to the website.

Warning, I'm technically still a salesman, despite the fact I can't remember my last sale.

There are a few of us here who Cutco. I haven't seen the knife you're talking about yet, but I'm not certain my boss still remembers I exist.

As to DD vs Straight edge, My DD is still going strong after 3+ ribcages and my idiot little brother attempting to saw through a vertebra rather than between (I was in the shower at the time) this year, whereas his straightedge held up to 1 before it started getting dull. The trade off is that you will likely have to send the knife back in to get it sharpened and such when it does get dull, but that's what the off season is for, right? My understanding is that some of the higher level sales reps can touch up the edge on a DD in a service call with a stone cut to match the profile, but IMHO it's not to the level that the factory edge is.

ETA: If you want to buy it, I can handle it, or you can talk to whoever's helped you before, no butthurt.

I've always bought off the web site. Didn't know you had to go through a dealer. Hell maybe I'm a dealer and dont even know it.

AFAIK, there is no way to buy off the website. If you could tell me how you've done it, I'd be interested to say the least.

I've been buying them off the internet for years...
All you have to do is go to the Cutco website....since I'm an owner all I have to do is type in an owner number or get them to send it to me and place an order.

Exactly what sunchaser said. A few years back a kid came by my office and I bought a huge cleaver for myself and a filet fishing knife for my dad. He asked me for my email address and I've been getting emails and updates from cutco ever since. Wife was *****en that our knives were dulling so we sent a bunch of knives back to be resharpened last year and they replaced 4 out of the bunch. Got them back and my wife was *****en because now she kept finding little nicks on her hands when she would wash dishes. Go figure. Anyway I bought my 2 hunting knifes and the shears off the net last year.

Now that I think about it, I get a small magazine from cutco with all of their knives and It has an owner number next to my name. If anyone wants me to buy them anything then pm me and I'll place an order. Granted you have to pay me back. I live in Northern Hidalgo County but work in McAllen everyday.

I have a Cutco hunting knife with the serrated edge and it works great. I especially love it for tougher hides like hogs. I still use a plain edge when I get into quartering an animal. Get yourself a work sharp knife sharpener and you can sharpen it yourself as well. Best darn sharpener I have seen.

I have a double d hunting knife - it was a gift from my brother. For everything except skinning, it is nails. You wont go wrong with it.

Same here. If you want to get it, I can handle it/submit the order, will take a phone call to get your info. email me red78@aggienetwork.com Regardless of how you do it, I'm pretty sure the price will be the same.

I have the hunting knife with the double d edge http://www.cutco.com/products/product.jsp?itemGroup=1769 and agree it's a damn good knife. I also have several other CUTCO knives, both double d edge and regular edge. All great knives.

Also agree with the post about the Work Sharp knife sharpener. It's easily the best sharpener I've ever owned, and the only one I've ever purchased that will get an edge shaving sharp.

Thanks for filling me in about the online purchases. As many times as they tell us the only way to buy is through one of us, you'd think it would be true. Anyways, I'd recommend buying through a rep for your first thing, that way you have an owners number of your own in the future, and can order online whenever you like. Price should be the same, if you're interested, hit me up at username at gmail.com.

I've never skinned an animal with a serrated blade, but I imagine it to be a bit cumbersome...great for sawing through thick pieces of meat or popping the hip joints out of place to quarter an animal...but skinning?

You guys that have worked with a serrated edge how was it?

Have had a cutco buck knife fixed blade x 8 yes or so. Good knife. But I like virtually all the cold steel knives better in terms of holding a edge

Can't tell you much cohibas. This year (the only year I've had my knife) I decided to freeze the hides and attempt to make buckskin when I have the time. I pulled 3-4 hides, and all the cutting was cutting through the skin, rather than cutting it off the meat.

For high volume usage, not impressed by the knifes ability to hold edge. Wouldn't buy again or reccomend to a friend.

Serrated blades. It's all about the steel. S30V is my fav. Holds an edge forever.
