I need to find a good 20-25kw Diesel Generator for a customer's business. Any of you guys have some recommendations for what brands or features I should look for? $8-10k is the ballpark price range. I'm not against buying a used one if it comes highly recommended in order to get it down to my price range. TIA

Also looking for a good local contact to buy from. Areas such as RGV, SA, Victoria, and Corpus.

I have a Lombardini Diesel with a 20-25kw genset at my home. I have no idea where it came from, but I love the motor....im just throwing out there in case you come across one.

John Deere and Cat both offer diesel generators. Look on their website for a dealer in your area. Holt is probably a dealer, and for John Deere, it's going to be an industrial dealer, I don't think the AG dealers sell them. They might, but I'm not sure.

I have a good friend that can probably help you (I just called to confirm that he deals with them, I don't know anything about price range).

Call Jason with H&V Equipment at 361-688-0124. Tell him Travis told you to call. They cover all of the area you are looking at.

I'm pretty sure John Deere does not offer an industrial-style generator that would be used for a business. John Deere mainly just supplies engines to generator packagers. With exception of maybe some smaller construction-type units.

1. Is your customer wanting this for prime power or standby application?

2. If standby, your customer will also need to look at a manual or automatic transfer switch.

3. I'd strongly recommend a Generac since it's a smaller generator. Other options are out there for larger generators, but Generac is very competitive and reliable on the smaller stuff. Check out the spec sheet on the SD020 and SD025.

http://www.generac.com/Industrial/Diesel/

4. Be sure to check on the city's fuel tank and sound requirements before purchasing the generator.

^^ City's, county's or aquifer recharge/MUD/water district/anyone else with Exempt plates who'd be pissed that you spilled diesel all over the place.

Cat, Kohler = King Ranch F150
Generac, Katolight = XLT or whatever the hell the next step is
Olympian = Your BIL's ratted out hunting truck
FG Wilson = XLT, but the steering wheel's on the wrong side
Aksa = Old symphillic donkey with a pallet on its back.

If noise is an issue, the enclosure will help more than the muffler.

This will be in an enclosed trailer (with a side door and back open during use). Generator will be primary source of energy, used to power a foam rig (insulation).
Thanks for the recs so far. I am pretty ignorant when it comes to diesel powered engines but need to get my customer away from ethanol.
Travis, I will give your buddy a call tomorrow. Thanks again.

Cat, Cummins, Kohler or Generac

Even with doors open, look closely at the combustion and radiator air requirements. That size is 36-40" wide, and will need maintenance clearance around it inside the trailer.

You need to talk to "terk". He works for Baldor and handles the portable line which is what you will probably want to consider over the standby models listed above. I'll notify him of this thread.

I have a former business associate who owns www.coloradostandby.com Ask for Larry and tell him that Doug from Fort Worth suggested you contact him. He has all types and will sell you one at a very good price.

What do you guys think of Doosan? They bought Ingersoll Rand's line of portable generators and compressors, but they're still sold through IR reps.

shoot me an email, I'll call you tomorrow morning. I'll see what I can dig up for you. If I can get you a deal, I'll be glad to! If not, I can get you pointed in the right direction. I've worked for both the Cadillac and the Kia of Power Generation, I like to think I know a little bit. My boss now is a second generation big time Aggie, so he gives me a LOT of latitude in helping out other Ags.

josht @ aggienetwork dotcom

Also, Larry & his wife Kim from Colorado Standby are great people! I'd be glad to send you their way as well... but we can discuss that tomorrow.

Aggreko has a used 30kW generator. Contact information is below:

Clint Cormier - Fleet Sales Specialist
Direct: 337.367.7884
clint.cormier@aggreko.com

Aggreko also rents units, I believe 1-800-AGGREKO will fix you up with a quote. Lots of Aggies at that company.

Also Cummins Southern Plains always treated me right for service. I wasn't around when they sourced and bought the unit so I don't have any sales people contact's, but call them at 713-679-2220.

Depending on what proportioner he's using and what else will be running in the trailer during spray operations, he'll probably need bigger than that. We're looking at an integrated screw compressor/genset for our next spray rig we're about to build. Something like this:
It adds quite a bit of space when you consider an air compressor will no longer be necessary.

We have 5 Generacs at work. They are all a little bigger than what you are looking for but we have very few problems with them.
