I purchased a new spinning reel for the surf. I seem to remember that braided line tends to twist and spinning reels can add twist to the line. What advice does the outdor board have?

Use good swivels

Keep some toenail clippers with you

I am using the new power pro slick 8 line 20 lb test

I would use braid on a spinning reel, as braided line has no memory.

Use braided lose fewer fish, horse em in an keep the line tight.

I've had tons of spinning reels and eventually all twist line. Mono or braid. If twist is a concern, Use a swivel, make sure the spinning reel has a large diameter spool and a smooth roller for the line. Personally I've tried braid but always end back up using mono. I used to exclusively use berkley trilene xt...but I have really had good luck with cajun line. Give em both a shot and see what you like better. Each has its benefits.

I use 8# P-Line CXX on mine.

I just spooled mine with suffix siege. Big fan of it on my baitcasters, very low memory and awesome abrasion resistance

Braids biggest issue is anywhere it can get a good pull and slip between the lower wraps. I use it on baitcasting and spinning though, with no real problems to speak of. I believe it's the power pro stuff.

i tried fishing braid out of my curados and it was a disaster. I'm either retarded or it wasn't meant for me. I fish 12lb big game with a 20lb fleuro leader

It's a Shimano Sahara. I've always used Stren but I will put something else on it if it will give better results in SW. I have all baitcasting reels except for one light spinning reel and this new one.

Any more recs? I'm going to spool up today and try it out on the local lakes this weekend.

Since I'm probably the only one that has used it....Nanofil.

mono, or braid if you need.

Fluorocarbon....HATE HATE HATE that ****...wouldn't use it if it were free (though I would buy up the closeout spools and resell them).

To help slow down the line twist, don't crank the handle on your egg beater while a fish is taking drag.

Floro is great for leaders. It sucks for a mainline.

I use braid where capacity is an issue, or where I intentionally need super heavy line on a smaller reel, such as when fishing around structure, or on my shark reels, or maybe where I need a lot of sensitivity working a bait.

Otherwise, I've pretty much done back to mono. I find the strech factor in mono is often a plus, and it works sufficiently in most applications, and it is quieter.

....not even a shock leader?

Three things to remember to avoid twist on a spinning reel.

1)Load it properly. Look at the face of your reel. It probably goes clockwise. If so lay the spool on the floor so that the line comes off clockwise. You can't rely on the label.....it might be on either side. I use one brand and it varies.

2) Flip the bail to retrieve rather than engaging the handle.

3) Don't waste your time trying to reel if the drag is doing it's thing.

Spinning reel- braid with a flouro leader.

Golfer- Where does your disdain for flouro come from? I love 20lb for flipping Invisx. I still use mono for some applications.

it's expensive, it's stiff, it backlashes/twists worse than mono or braid, the "invisibility" is vastly overrated especially compared to mono, it gets brittle when kinked, knots suck, it's expensive (had to be said twice), and it just doesn't handle well...

Other than that...GREAT product

"it's expensive".....True...a shock leader of FC costs about 25 cents.

"it's stiff".........True...a #20 shock leader of FC is stiffer than #8 Mono. a #200 FC leader is stiffer than #50 mono.

"it backlashes/twists worse than mono or braid"......I've never backlashed a shock leader. Surely you don't think anyone on Texags would use it as line.

"invisibility" is vastly overrated especially compared to mono.......No it's not but regardless....A $400 rod...a $600 reel...$4 worth of line....a $2 lure....I'm going to throw in another 25 cents and take my chances.

"knots suck"......Practice

"it's expensive..... (had to be said twice)"....25 cents, 25 cents, 25 cents, 25 cents. Doesn't sound like it to me. I guess it's all relative.

"and it just doesn't handle well"...Practice

sunchaser nailed it.

Spool your braid right and you'll have no problems. I use braid on most of my reels w/ a fluorocarbon leader. I typically start with about a 6' leader and once it gets under about 3' I clip it off and tie on a new one.

The op asked about spooling a spinning reel...not filling up a spool with a shock leader...

No, but I just assumed that was what the op meant with polycarbonate (quick search pulls nothing of this plastic used as a fishing line).

I use Suffix braided line on all three of my spinners. Love it.

Went to Academy and looked at all of it. Many choices. Couldn't figure it out. If it was for one of my Curados I'd have no problem.

Some web sites say the braid could mess up the line roller on the bail. Almost bought braid but in the end just bought some Stren Original. I have an excuse to go back to Academy now.

I'll take the heat for this thread derailment. I used to hate flouro but I have come to discover it's benefits in certain applications.

I use Suffix 832 on all of my spinning rods and back them with mono to keep the cost down a bit.

That sounds like a good idea. I noticed many of the braids did not contain enough line to fill the spool.
