Could a security clearance delay a NICS check?

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Took my father over to Cheaper than Dirt to look/buy a handgun and his NICS check was delayed. I know he's fairly disappointed because the guy said NICS could call back or there is the 5 day waiting period but I am headed back to CS Sunday.
Anyways, I'm curious if delays are more common in the afternoon (perhaps federal employees taking off at 5?) or does having a security clearance and any type trip up NICS approval?

TIA

I have a security clearance as do alot of the people I associate with. I have a CHL and no issues. And my friends have never had an issue and most of them don't have a CHL so they have to be run through NICS No issues.

I have clearance as well. Has not slowed anything down, your father's situation might just be a coincidence. I will apply for the CHL in a couple weeks, and I'm guessing it will be normal like everyone else.

I cannot figure that system out. I have been delayed and they never called back, delayed and the called the next day, an hour or so later and just a few minutes later. Also several immediate approvals.

I am a CHL holder now so no more hassle..

Is your fathers name fairly common? Ive heard of some having delayes due to issues with others that have similar names.

Common names are the biggest issue that I can come u p with. Other than that there is no ryme or rhythm. Nics has been really bad about calling us back with approvals lately. Most of our delays go past the three business day holding period.

I've seen a guys with uncommon names and a TS constantly get delays. I've also seen folks with a TS take longer to have NFA paperwork processed. It does seem to make a difference.

As for this:

There isn't a 5 day waiting period. If the FFL doesn't get an approve within 3 days, they can transfer the gun. So if he tried to purchase it (and NICS was run) today, he'd be able to pick up the gun on Sunday.

been a while since I purchased a gun (last ones were the 3 stripped AR lowers I bought right around Jan 2009, coincidentally).

I wonder if the "troubles with NICS" might be due to intentional Executive Department neglect? I have a clearance and have never had anything but an instant approval. But those were almost exclusively under former administrations...

I have a uncommon name and a TS. I have bought around 30 guns in the last 5 years, and have had only one delay. That delay was the only time I put my SSN on the paperwork. My dealer told me that they see more delays when you put your SSN down. He recommended just leaving it blank on all further forms.

Awesome responses, thanks. We have an extremely uncommon last name and I told him he didn't need to put down his SSN because he's no John Smith.
Is there anything proactive we can do to speed along the NICS process such as requesting CTD call back today or tomorrow?

Another question that came up on the ride home that I was unable to answer: Who all knows he bought that specific (serialed) firearm. Does the firearm purchase paperwork stay between the buyer and the FFL, for their records only?

I generally have people leave off their social because I don't want the responsibility of storing that document for 20 years. It really only makes a difference for folks with common names.

CTD can call back 15 times today or tomorrow if they want. You just have to convince someone there to follow up on things. I've seen delays clear in 15 minutes and others that never clear.

Only the buyer and FFL know that the specific firearm was purchased. The serial number is written on the 4473 but it is not transmitted to the ATF or FBI. Now, with a new gun, it's fairly easy to trace who the purchaser was. ATF contacts the manufacturer, who gives the distributor, who gives the dealer, who gives the end buyer. Dealers have to retain records for 20 years. If the dealer goes out of business before that time, they have to send all of their records to the ATF.
