I have a uncommon name and a TS. I have bought around 30 guns in the last 5 years, and have had only one delay. That delay was the only time I put my SSN on the paperwork. My dealer told me that they see more delays when you put your SSN down. He recommended just leaving it blank on all further forms.
I generally have people leave off their social because I don't want the responsibility of storing that document for 20 years. It really only makes a difference for folks with common names.

Awesome responses, thanks. We have an extremely uncommon last name and I told him he didn't need to put down his SSN because he's no John Smith.
Is there anything proactive we can do to speed along the NICS process such as requesting CTD call back today or tomorrow?
Another question that came up on the ride home that I was unable to answer: Who all knows he bought that specific (serialed) firearm. Does the firearm purchase paperwork stay between the buyer and the FFL, for their records only?
CTD can call back 15 times today or tomorrow if they want. You just have to convince someone there to follow up on things. I've seen delays clear in 15 minutes and others that never clear.
Only the buyer and FFL know that the specific firearm was purchased. The serial number is written on the 4473 but it is not transmitted to the ATF or FBI. Now, with a new gun, it's fairly easy to trace who the purchaser was. ATF contacts the manufacturer, who gives the distributor, who gives the dealer, who gives the end buyer. Dealers have to retain records for 20 years. If the dealer goes out of business before that time, they have to send all of their records to the ATF.
