After trying (and failing) to convert my Surefire M951 weapon light from a 60 lumen incandescant to 493 lumen LED, I decided I'd give the new Streamlight TLR-1s HP a try. I picked one up from GT Distributors on my way home yesterday for $114 plus tax.

Here's a pic of the light installed on my AR:

And here's a pic of the beam at night:

At 46,000 candelas and 200 lumens I'm pretty happy with this light. It is MUCH brighter than my Surefire was and more powerful than the TLR-1 that I have mounted on my night stand pistol. While using the forward grip it is easy to utilize both momentary and constant on with the use of my thumb. The only thing I'm not thrilled about is the size and shape of the bezel. It's 2.5 inches in diameter and cone shaped. I wish it were a little smaller and shaped differently. That doesn't bother me too much though.

It gives exactly the kind of light output I was looking for and the run time is approximately twice that of the Surefire I had on there before. It has a strobe mode I haven't and probably won't use, but that feature is available for those who wish to utilize it.

I'm not really a light guy, but I'd give it an 8 out of 10 for my needs and I'd certainly recommend it to someone in the market.

I was thinking about getting that for my AR and just using my regular TLR-1 for my pistol but the size just seems too much for me. I can switch the light back and forth pretty quick between guns as well.

It's larger than I'd like it to be, but it doesn't seem as large as it looks in that picture. If I get a chance this evening I'll post some pictures from different angles.

I like my Eagletac T20C2 MK II 720 lumens at the emmitter, and 580 actual out the front. 60 lumens at the medium setting. DAMN bright. They make a weapons kit for it too, if ya like. I have one mounted on a PS90.

I have never seen one of those larger reflector model TRLs before, though. Interesting.

I haven't quite figured the lumen thing out. The lamp replacement I bought to go in my M951 wouldn't fit, but it did fit in my 6P and G2's. It was supposed to be 493 lumens, but when compared side by side to my Streamlight ProTac 2L, which is 180 lumens on the high setting, it wasn't as bright.

Since you're the flashlight guru, how can a 180 lumen light put out a brighter beam than a 493 lumen light? When I shined my 180 on top of the 493 it became a bright spot in the middle of the beam.

On that note, my ProTac 2L has quickly become my favorite flashlight. I carry it everywhere I go and find myself using it all the time. Great little light.

I forgot to mention that the TLR-1s HP is supposed to reach out to 400 meters.

It has to do with beam intensity. Don't know all the science, but the broader beam spreads the light out more making it seem less bright.

Surefire markets the wide beam with no dead spots...better light over a wider area to see what you are up against.

Hoss, how do you feel about the validity of that 400 meter claim? Have you had a chance to look at it at longer distances?

I'm very interested in it, especially if that is anywhere close to legit.

If I think about it I'll let you know after this weekend. I plan to do some night time varmint hunting with it. Last night I just shined it in my back yard.

Yes, the spread can effect things. The size of a reflector makes a difference. Generally, unless you double the lumens - it's hard for the human eye to see much difference from 1 light to the next.

Also, be aware that many lumen ratings are not true to life. A lot of them are the theoretical maximum at the emitter lever for the 1st second the light is one... before heat and battery drain kick in.

ANSI ratings are accurate. And some companies DO list the "OTF" (out the front" lumens, along with the emitter level lumens. Usually, you loose 20-25% as the light is guided out the reflector. Some reflector designs (texture and shape) work this percentage better than others

Interesting info. Now that you mention the OTF thing, I wanna say the upgraded lamp I tried was advertised as 493 lumens and 200 OTF. I didn't know what that meant at the time. Next time I'll know what to look for!

I was looking at the Eagle Tac website today after reading your post above. The next time I'm in the market I my give one of those a try.
