Ol ladys family has a cabin there. Anyone have any experience hunting that area? I'm sitting in a stand in Alabama right now dreaming of taking down a bear in New Mexico. Any hardships in getting a license for non residents? Any benefits for active military? Entertain me while I look for white tail.

Would be interested in water fowl in that area too.

Bear-Couple areas that generally have good bear numbers.
-East side of the Wheeler area and Goose Lake area
-Far north end of Latir Wildness
-if I were to go myself-if you draw a line between Angel Fire and Taos, when the watershed flips and drains west-that area holds a LOT of bears.

A lot of this is dependant on which season you hunt. In the fall it would take less than 2 hours to find a bear in any of these areas. The simple key is finding acorns.

Waterfowl-I'd head east over to Maxwell.

I used to camp in Red River on the other side of the range from Eagle Nest. I can tell you this: don't camp near white trash that feeds bears hot dogs near a public campsite by sticking them to the ends of tree branches then waiting overnight to try to get pictures. Some poor lady in a tent got mauled a couple of years ago over that one. We ended up moving on to camp somewhere else.

That first campground just west of Red River used to scare the hell out of me.

One of the bear attacks I was involved with got it's start in Cimarron Canyon SP about 3 days prior to the attack.

Too much to explain; you'll need to wade through this when you have a chance.

Find a patch of oaks with fairly sweet acorns, and you will find the bears pretty easy. Spot and stalk in the fall is a heck of a lot of fun up there.

Just pay for me and I'll put you on bears in that country.

I periodically guided up in that area about 10 years ago. That is the area I used to do my bear work in. I looked for 10-15 radio collared bears everyday, so I learned there habits pretty well.

Most of the areas I know are national forest and/or state land. Don't know the current permit info off the top of my head. That info should be in Log's link.

I know a couple guides in that area. One is in Eagle Nest, the other is in Red River, I also know one near Taos. That is a good area for Bear but baiting is not allowed, you have to use dogs.
Contact Dirk Neal in Red River, he guides independently and for other companies as well. Not sure what he charges but he does catch a lot of bear.

I did spot and stalk through that area. Dogs are fun, but prefer spot and stalk.

I don't know if he is still running bears, but I'd look at Hap Blackstern too.
