Spent some time fondling 1911s at lunch.

Thoughts on Kimber, Sig, S&W and the new Remington? Fit and finish seems best on the Kimbers, but the Sig and S&W come in under a grand, and the Remington is only $635. I also found the slide releases on all but the Kimber to be almost impossible to work one handed. Is this a break in issue?

Also found it odd that he says he can't get Springfield 1911s right now. At all. Says the wait is months.

I guess I fail, since I didn't notice the other 1911 thread on the first page. Still interested in your thoughts.

I bought myself a Kimber Desert Warrior for my bday last year after my FNP-45 was stolen. Good heavens the thing is unbelievable. And I still haven't put more than maybe 400 rounds through it.

You still craving some birdseye maple grips for it, or have I helped to raise the bar for you?

If I drop the hammer, I will definitely want some tx4guns grips and A&M medallions.

I went out to knock some rust of for the chl renewal class. I am surprised at more accurately I shot my Kimber 1911 than my .40 caliber. Itmay be because it's a bit heavier but I like to shoot it.

You should check out the Desert Eagle 1911 - good price, well made (in Israel). I own one, it performs great. http://www.magnumresearch.com/Expand.asp?ProductCode=DE1911G

Another brand that gets very good reviews is STI International. Many models/prices to choose from. Georgetown, TX. http://www.stiguns.com/ I believe the Spartan is one of their moderately priced models. I do not own one, but hope to one of these days.

I'd suggest you add Colt to that list as well. They are under a thousand and seem to be much less finicky than a Kimber. Springfield, especially the Range Officer seems to be a good bargain at $750 and the S&W E-Series is gaining a good following as well but are anywhere from $750-1200. No matter what you choose, tx4guns grips are a must!

It's probably the lighter sliding trigger masking a trigger control issue.

I'll have to check them out. Does he have a website or do I need to just comb through threads?

I'm working in some new Gonzales flag grips. Will be checkered walnut with a laser etched flag.

AC, I'm out if the ATM pewter charms. Gotta go with pricey sterling seal charms if you want that style.

Thoughts on Kimber, Sig, S&W and the new Remington?

Kimber - has been discussed ad nauseum here. Good guns, though I think they are a bit overpriced. The production over the last few years has brought them back up to a very good and reliable platform.

Sig - Don't know much about these to be honest. Probably a good firearm, but I can't really expand much.

S&W - Relatively new to the 1911 market (last 6-8 years or so, IIRC). Pretty solid platforms. I want to say that their internals are different, but can't remember. With as many manufacturers that produce this design now, it's hard to distinguish between each make as to the nuances between them all.

Remington - For an upper end entry level 1911, you will have a hard time finding anything better. More or less no frills, but solid and gets really good reviews.

Other brands to look at:

RIA - if you don't want to drop a fortune, but want a 1911 to see if you really like it, the Rock Islands are really great entry level firearms. Won't win any beauty contests, but all reviews I've read have been positive to glowing.

American Classic (Metroarms) - A step above the RIA's in both quality and appearance. I have one an would definitely tell you to give them a once over.

Colt - More expensive than either above, but not nearly as expensive as Kimber. And hey, it's Colt.

Desert Eagle - Rumored to be a very solid platform. Comparably priced to Colts and mid level Springfield.

Or you could instantly become one of the 1911 snobs and get a Fusion, Ed Brown, Dan Wesson or Springer Custom Shop and spend a freaking fortune on a work of art.

1911 Snob and proud of it. Love my Fusion. Note the extended slide release. Can be operated one handed, even with my short thumbs.

I have a Kimber with A&M medallion grips, love it as my first 1911. May move up to one of the showier makes later, but for now I'm happier than a possum eating s**t

I have some black alumagrips with the Gonzalez flag laser etched on them. Maybe tx4guns can post those. I will try and post a few pics of them on my SA Combat 1911

Dan Wesson is a step above all mentioned, but in the same price catagory, the Springfield is the best buy.

phideaux... I would disagree that DW is a step above Fusion. Part of the reason I chose Fusion.

Don't get me wrong... DW makes a fine pistol.

I have the 1911 Sig - love it! I'm a Sig fanboy and own a number of Sig pistols which turned me towards their 1911. It's not really comparable to the "high" end 1911's such as Wilson, Les, etc...but as a solid, reliable and extremely accurate pistol it is superb. It's never had any issues with feeding or ejection problems and the group I shoot with have Kimbers and Springfields and the Sig easily holds it's own with that crowd. From a seated rest I've grouped Black Hills and Golden Sabers right at 2 inches @ 25yds (which I am incapable of achieving on my own unfortunately...)

Its big, heavy, and the most accurate pistol I own. All the parts are forged and it comes with Novak sights. One thing that some people may not like is that it does have an external extractor (as many 1911's have, but some purists don't like them).

True enough Wadd. I was more focused on those mentioned by the OP. Fusion is indeed a fine weapon.

I'm drinking and cleaning guns. My AR and XD40 were both dirty girls.

Dreaming of a 1911. I've wanted one since I was 12 and watching black and white WWII movies. I'm going to come into a couple of extra kilobucks that are earmarked for play.

I shall have a 1911 within the month. Just have to decide what I want. Pretty sure I want a 4" so I can have the option of carrying it or my XD40.
