I am looking to make my first handgun purchase and wanted to see what everyone thought about this gun.

First, this will be used for protection and general target shooting.

Second, price is important and would like to stay around this price range ($400).

The gun fits well in my hand but I have not shot it. From the reviews online, it seems to be an okay gun.

Do any you own this gun or know anything about it?

TIA

Sorry, had 9mm in my head when I typed 40mm. Y'all are a lot more forgiving than the general board.

40mm is like a 157 caliber!

I have the 9mm version. It's actually a pretty decent range gun, but I've not had it long enough to determine if it is reliable enough for defense use. I have a feeling though that it would indeed be useful for home defense. Overall I am happy with the purchase.

BTW, as you have probably figured out by now, 40mm is not the correct caliber. It is an inch measurement of .40 diameter, and called the .40 S&W.

What I've read is that it is the same gun as the PX4 but is aluminum alloy instead of the polymer. Same rotating barrel, double action, etc, etc. Beretta liked the cougar design so much they didn't want it discontinued and created the PX4. How it performs....I cannot comment on.

For $400 I would get a better handgun even though I've never handled a Stoeger.

Sig P2022
Ruger SR9
I'd even go for a used Glock 22 or 23 over a Stoeger even though I've never been a Glock fan.

I have had the 9 mm for 3 years and love it. I have never had a single malfunction, and it currently occupies my nightstand for home defense.

I had a 9mm version of the stoeger cougar.

It was an okay pistol. I had alot of ejection problems. However I am certain that it was a fluke occurance with the pistol. Most people have great luck with them.

I've also had bad ejection problems from an HK USP...

In the 400$ range, the sig pro is the better pistol.

I'd be interested in hearing the details of this ag special. I intend to purchase a Stoeger Cougar 9 mm in mid January.

40mm..I think you could mount it in the back of your truck. If not then you might want to purchase an AC-130. I heard the 40mm shoots fairly well out of those.
