Howdy OB Friends....

I've got the itch to take my son and two kayaks on a weekend excursion or maybe even a day one if it's close enough to the Austin area. I know flow rates are little to non right now in many of the rivers in Texas. Any suggestions would be appreciated. We are open to driving a few hours if we can get on a river that would provide us a good day's worth of paddling.

I know its a little bit of a drive from there, but out near beaumont is Big Thicket. its great for a two day float, you camp for the night on sandbar (should be lots of those no matter where you float right now)

Mouth, we enjoy paddling the barton creek area for sure. We just wanted to a little farther away from home.

Problem, I'm looking at your suggestion right now.

Slick, that was one of our initial choices.

Thanks guys!

I did lower colorado a month or so ago - smithville to la grange was done in a day and a half (probably too much for a little kid). There are closer places to put in/take out along that route though. Look at the LCRA site for some more ideas.

Smithville to La Grange had decent views, nothing great but was very wide and hardly moving - when facing certain directions the strong winds would be pushing the water backwards.

Milton Reimers Ranch Park, off Hamilton Pool road (just before you get to Hamilton Pool).
Took the wife & kids there last summer & had a great time.

+1 for Colorado. We've done a couple trips down the Colorado in the last two months. It's not an "exciting" float, but it is nice and relaxing. The flow rates south of Austin have been staying very nice. Can check them here:

Have fun!

Do the Guadalupe River Paddling Trail around Riverside Park in Victoria. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/fishboat/boat/paddlingtrails/inland/victoria/

A fairly new trail in a quaint community.
