What's that thing for? I like the look of those shirts, but I have no idea what that loop thing is supposed to do.

I assumed it was for glasses or a retractable pliers holder or something of that nature. May not be for anything. Most peopl I know that where those shirts never picked up a rod in there life. I dunno. I buy the cheap Magellan ones and I use it for anything that will clip on it that I need in the open and handy. ***shrug***

Rod holder when wading, butt of rod goes in your shorts pocket and rod gets velcro'd in at your chest, keeps you from dewshing your reel in salt water more than you have to.

Forgot to add in for use when swapping bait or lures, would not recommend this as a method of holding your rod while actually fishing, that's what your meat beaters ate for

Rod Holder

If you look at a traditional vest, you'll see they have the same feature but also include a loop at the waist to slide the butt of the rod into. I don't know why the shirts don't have the loop, unless it's just because you're expected to be wearing pants with pockets. Most anglers that would wear a vest such as the above will be wearing waders - thus, no pockets.

Here you go. Very handy when you are retying etc.... It's also functional if you wade as I do without a net. Once you get one hand on the red you can take care of the rod and dehook the fish with both hands without washing your reel. On a Columbia you need to sew a corded loop on the opposite side.

You learn something new everyday!

I always used it to hold the cord attached to my nail clippers that I use for retying.

i thought people used their mouth to hold the rod...

GeronimoAg....Some days you learn more than one thing. Start looking around for a pair of ceramic clippers. The housing is plastic and the cutter is ceramic. They will last forever or until borrowed/stolen. I always pull the hook eye pin out so people won't think I fly fish.....otherwise they are perfect.

If you were and old school "third bar" surrf fisherman, you used your teeth to carry your rod as you swam to the third bar...

Takes some stones.

CP. Not that complicated.....The only negative for them and I have used them for a long time is the ceramic portion. One surface is flat...the other is a triangular knife edge......neither are very big. If the epoxy or whatever they are glued down with fails that piece is gone and they are worthless.

I don't wear them for fishing, I wear them when I am training dogs. I shoot right handed, so I use that to hold my whistle and launcher control out of the way so I can easily shoulder the shotgun without it grabbing one of those cords.

.....so if the dogs don't listen...you shoot them?

Frat guys wear fishing shirts? Damn they must want to be like me.

Also, the two loops on the left side of the left pocket have to be for sunglasses right?

Does anyone ever keep the plastic fishing license pouch? I just laminate mine every year at the office.

During this discussion, Sunchaser whipped up some breakfast tacos with that eggbeater of his.

Actually, they're not all that bad. My daughter used one of my Penn 4400SS to catch and release this on Sunday. If it weren't for the silk smooth drag I'm sure the 10 lb test would have popped. Fish was 30".

That's awesome....beautiful girl....great redfish. Neither of you will ever forget that.

I still have about a dozen of those Penn SS's. Extremely trouble free. The drags are good as you said. The only issue I had was the line capacity as I could empty the spool quite often. When Daiwa came out with the 700SS I switched out due to line capacity as well as the handle was reversible since a lot of people can't reel left handed. Also trouble free.

I switched out again and I really like this one best but they are anything but trouble free.

As this thread developed I wondered if Columbia even knew what the velcro tab was for so I asked them.

Ultimately I had to go online and get a shirt number like FM 7120 or FM 7130. They figured it out when I said, "It's where your logo is."

The answer I got back was you can take a broken down multi piece rod and put the the large ends in the pocket and keep the tips in place with the tab. I told them that I doubted that you could get more than two tips in that space....much less four.

I shared that fisherman that know the true purpose and want it to function properly look for a shirt maker that puts a loop on the right pocket big enough for a rod butt....or they sew one on yours or they use the tiny cord and place a larger loop around it.

"Oh really!"

Anyway they were going to pass it along to their designers. I started to suggest a couple of other companies that were doing it right but I was afraid I might not be asked to serve as the model for the new Sunchaser shirt...

Maybe we can get one with ATM on it in maroon rather than white.
