The one time i went fishing down on the coast, all the other guys had some very light weight breathable button up shirts that they all loved. anyone have some of these they'd recommend? I'm doing a lot of work in the south texas area and something that breathes really well would be great. I have no idea what brands or anything they were.

I think most that you see are Columbia brand, but Academy's house brand, "Magellen", is catching on too.

I have both Columbia and Magellan brands and both work fine. Since I don't care about brands, I like the price point of the Magellan.

magellan. get the long sleeve ones. you can always roll them up and keep the sleeves there with the attached button or loop.

There are two types of magellans though, one is heavier than the other so make sure you get what you want!

I have quite a few of the Magellan shirts. Nothing wrong with the quality or price.

I have both and find the only difference is Columbia's seem to be a little farther ahead on the "fashion curve". My Magellan's are a little b**** but it just might be my particular shirts. Underarmour seem a little too expensive, but nice.

Be sure to try on the columbia ones. I usually wear a large but can wear a medium or even a small in some of their stuff.

I like the velcro shirt pockets on the Magellan. Nice to have a shirt that doesn't dump my cell phone out every time I bend over.

I usually wear a XL, but the L Magellan fits perfectly. I think they just run big.

Magellen are like 15 bucks.. I can buy 30 of them and trash them as they get the fuzz balls.

I like the pants as well except you have to get teh right color because if your arse gets sweaty outside, everyone is going to know.

If you wear fishing shirts, there is no such thing as a fashion curve. You've already accepted that you are no longer a hipster cool kid.

The longsleeve t-shirts are way better than the button down shirts. Less baggie, breathe better, and dry quicker.

I have a closet full of them. My wife makes fun of me 'cause that's all I wear in the summer. You can definitely feel the quality of the UA, but, hard to justify the price. I like the Columbia omni-shade with the stain release for a good price and high quality.

No one has mentioned that this kind of shirt comes with an SPF rating, like sunscreen. Better shirts have a higher rating. This is also part of the rationale behind buying only long sleeve shirts for summer wear. They will keep the sun off your arms.

I wish I knew about these things when I was working on a survey crew. F*** cotton.

So, try them on when you first buy them as I think the Magellans run a little small and never fit me right. Columbia does well on my body.

I also like the Velcro pockets better than zippers

Re: the Columbia and Megallan shirts.

It should be noted that both brands make the traditional fishing shirts in 100 percent nylon and 100 percent cotton.

Pick and choose between the two fabrics wisely.

I have a short sleeved UA shirt that I love. Super soft but the price is high. I also bought a long sleeved Columbia Tamiami shirt for $40 and worth every penny. Super soft and dries out extremely fast. I'm going to buy another one soon after wearing it this weekend.

Put Simms on your bucket list. They have a great line of fishing shirts. Near the start they had some tie in with Tarponwear which had a great line but an awful marketing strategy. Simms is going to run from around $70 to 100. They go up to a 50 PF rating. I wouldn't advise making an Internet purchase as they have a large variety. Nylon, poly and a blend of the two as well as cotton blends with the nylon and the poly. If you like to wade they have one line that is extremely light.

Hook&Tackle Air/X is another good wading shirt.

If you ever show up in Fulton stop at Seaworthy on Beach street. Really good store and they carry all of the fishing related Simms stuff.

I have both long sleeve and short sleeve shirts by Magellen, Columbia and UA. The UA shirts are by far the best, but I found my two in sale for 15 bucks. They aren't enough better to justify paying full price though. Next best are the magellens. Columbias are cur to narrow for me.

I don't have any of the UA shirts. I have a few Columbia button downs, but their Perfect Cast Polos are the best shirt that they make. For a button down fishing shirt, the Magellans are hard to beat for the money. I can get three of them for the price of one Columbia.

The magellan shirts have lake fork, aransas pass, and laguna madre models, what are your favorites of these three?

It is my experience that heavy sweat in one of these shirts is the suck. That don't "wick", they allow for air to move through the shirt. I love them for fishing as it is usually breezy, and they have mucho pockets for carrying crap while wade fishing. When it gets real hot in the summer, I go back to cotton tshirts.

The difference in the 3fers and some of the more technical shirts is the fabric. If you are talking about nylon versus nylon coated with something like Intera or Cor3 there will be a suck difference. The coated thread ones will wick better and they will dry better.

Likewise the way the shirts are made is important. If the shoulder flap(if it doesn't have one it's crap)is covered with Cool Mesh it will wick better as well as feel better. Venting around your arm pits is also important.

.....and if you have been fishing all day more than your shirt stinks.

I cut all the decals off the Magellan shirts/pants. Just use a seam ripper (wife has one). or a spear pointed knife.

Another vote for Magellan. Pretty much the only shirt I wear to work outside in the summer. With a breeze it's like having an air conditioned shirt.

As already mentioned, columbia's shirts are way bigger than what they are sized at. I typically wear a M/L in t-shirts, but have to get a S in the Columbia shirts.

Also, I like the thicker cotton shirts better than the light weight synthetic fabric. They just feel like they're more durable.

Also, the button spacing on the light weight shirts pisses me off. The first button below the collar button is right on my neck so it feels like it's choking me and the one below that is a good 5-6 inches lower so it looks like I'm a 70's porn star showing off my man chest.

Another Magellan fan here. I picked up 5 of the short-sleeve button downs for .88 cents during the online beta clearance sale.

The Lake Fork shirts are cotton, the Laguna Madre shirts are nylon. I've seen the Aransas Pass shirts, but don't own any of them, so I can't speak to their composition. Of the other two, I like the cotton ones better. They are more durable, and you can iron them if you ever want to wear them somewhere other than fishing.
