Heeler is almost 10 and getting more intolerant of activity in the street or adjacent yards. Do those 'bark' collars work? Are they humane?

Help!

Smart dogs learn very quickly. I used a bark shock collar on my lab, and once he was shocked a couple of times, I never even had to keep batteries in it after that. If I just put it on him, he was deathly silent.

I usually use a down/stay (which my dogs usually hate when there's something to bark at) to get them to stop barking.

I've thought about trying the citronella collar, but up until now a bottle with 20% vinegar / 80% water has worked.

You've just gotta be fast with it... it can't be "BARK!" *fumble fumble* *spritz*

you've gotta be able to pull off "BAR*spritz*...kpthfglrg!"

i met a dog that had been trained on the citronella collar and it wouldn't bark at all.

shock collar did wonders...

my roommates dog barks uncontrollably at anything that moves. Finally I broke down and bought a $45 collar on amazon. After being shocked a few times, he never barks any time the collar is on (and like the previous poster the batteries don't even work anymore)

for those that think the shock is mean, its harmless... it is just that weird vibration like those old prank hand shockers give you. The dog is not injured at all and it is mostly a nuisance to them.

Actually, it's not a nuisance, it's a surprise, and any unpleasant surprise will do. I like using something that isn't a collar because then your dog needs to wear a collar all the time to remind it.

I also insist that people use whatever they're planning on using on themselves first -- if it's a shock collar, they have to shock themselves on the neck once with it cranked all the way up, if it's citronella they have to give themselves a whiff of it, if it's a spritz of vinegar water then spritz some of that in your face...

Make them wear the collar for a few days before turning it on.
