I'm in Metroplex. Green blades starting to come up already.

I'm one of those guys that has always struggled a little bit with my lawn, so I need all your expertise.

Mid March. Best time is after second cut of grass and when you see some rain in the forcast (but don't wait for it)

I'd say March, as well. Also, check out www.dirtdoctor.com

over the years I've found that cheap 12-12-12 does as good as the expensive stuff.

What type of fertilizer do you typicall buy? The Scott products at home depot just see so damn expensive. Where would you find a cheap 12-12-12?

Someone on the boards here recently posted a timeline of what to do to your yard and when. It's too bad that the search function around here sucks ass.

Randy Lemmon's schedule works well for gulf coast lawns.

My favorite fertilizer, for everything from grass to trees and flowers, is Medina Growin Green. Wont find it at HD or Lowe's, though. Only found at farm and ranch stores or nurseries.

"End of February" with a 15-5-10, per Randy Lemmon's Gulf Coast Gardening. We put ours out yesterday (or my lawn guy did, anyway). NitroPhos Imperial is one of the several brands he recommend. I believe there's another application at the end of March; this one of for quick greening-up.

We've been following his schedule for nearly a year and our lawn looks like crap after all the freezes, but still is better than almost all of our neighbors.

The only way to know for sure what ratio of fertilizer to use is to have a soil test done.

My weeds are already up in Houston. What should I use? Spray? Weed Feed? Help

Have not used anything since weed/feed last spring.

I don't worry about the weeds that are popping up. Summer time heat will them.

Fertilize at the end of March, grow your grass thick and lush, and those winter weeds will get crowded out and die.

One less application to worry about.

Any advice on when to fertilize Bermuda? I've got crab grass growing green in a few places.

You might also want to put out a preemergent herbicide a couple of times a year. You may have missed the timing on the 1st application.

Duck's link above will tell you when to do it.

yeah, the heat will take out most weeds but not the crabgrass nor dallis grass. I get thistles too where I live in the country. I just spot spray those with roundup. We need rain!

I broke down and watered in the Scott's Weed/Feed for southern lawns yesterday evening. The most notable in my yard right now is what I've been told is henbit...it's up to mid shin in some places. I did the fertilizer only last year and tried pulling what I could by hand. I thought that would help for this year. I think all I did was piss them off. I have Weed b Gone for sourthern lawns on standby.

i threw out the scots weed and feed this past week and have been watering the tar out of the lawn. hoping to see the lush green like i did when i bought the house. We have lost a few spots, and a trail from the dogs. But the spots we re-sodded(1/2 of the backyard) look healthy. HOping that the summer will kill my weeds. the sod was not the cleanest sod and has some junk in it.

We had dallis grass really bad last year. Had to hire some guys to come and pull it up by hand. There were several black lawn bags full of the stuff when they were done.

That's when we decided we needed to do preemergent herbicide.
