What say you OB?

My son comes in the house last night with a cool rock he found wedged in a railroad tie. Anyone have an idea what this is (weight is 7.2 oz).

Found here:

Wait!? So your "tough love" picture posting tactic worked!?

I may have to try that with Manny.

I'm no help on the rock but it looks cool.

Sex stone? Cool, maybe it will get rid of the Mrs. headache.

No streak place. Used the bottom of a coffee cup and it looks grey. ???

They use iron ore wastes and stuff like that for railroad bed. Most likely, it is an iron ore stone that was pressed into the bottom of the tie over time.

It is a piece of slag that they used to use in RR track beds. It just got pressed into the tie. I have a HUGE chunk that weighs about ten pounds somewhere in my rock collection.

Too bad it is not meteorite. That would be worth a chunk of change.

We found a large chunk of Molybdenum out on our railroad spur at work. We stock Chrome Moly steel at our warehouse so it was pretty cool to find a big chunk of it out there. Mouth is correct about the waste metal being used in the rail road aggregate. I am not sure about which iron this is but find a metallurgist and find out. Cool find!!
