How long do you want to ignore this user?

What is this and how to I kill it. It is in my St.Augustine-grass in south College Station. I put out a fertilizer/preemergent from Producers last fall and spring.

I've been pulling these all summer. I water just enough to keep the yard green, but by no means a lush environment. If they were softer, I'd fill the whole effin yard with the stuff and be done with it. That way I'd never have to mow or water!

Don't know what it is, but I got it too. I have been pulling them up since last year, and keep finding more. It grows close to the ground and weaves in and out of the St Augustine.

Took some to our favorite nursery, and the owner said he did not know the technical name but the old timers call it "barnyard grass".

I this crap has started a hostile takeover in my yard. It started out along edges of the deck, fence and road. I'm betting due to the edges it came in from the bird crap with seeds in it.

He recommened Image spray. We will have to wait to apply when there is several dry days afterward, which we don't look like is going to happen anytime soon. This grass is VERY invasive..

Also, I can't remember the name, but we will have to spray again with a product everywhere this is that kills seeds prior to the spring growth starting. He did say if done correctly it will knock it out. But it will take a treatment before it goes dormant for the fall/winter, and again for the seeds before spring.

Pulling it is baiscally futile once it gets a hold in your yard. It weaves itself so tightly with the St. Agustine runners that you do even more damage to the good stuff trying to get the crap stuff out.

it's not barnyard grass, it's a broadleaf weed, not a grass.

2,4-D should zap it once it is growing. Also, apply Greenlight Portrait NOW as a pre-emergent treatment for next spring. Lowe's or HD should have it.

I've worked in lawn care in my pop's business for over a year. I've encountered this weed on bermuda, but never st. augustine. The only thing that worked was trimec or MSMA. you are out of luck sense you have st. augustine. you can't use either herbicide on that type of grass.

I would try Atrazine. Atrazine kills most broadleaf weeds and works as a pre-emergent as well. It's been used for decades on st. augustine. I would throw compost or a fertilizer from a local nursery on your lawn to thicken it up. Make sure you have Floratam St. Augustine and not some other breed. If your lawn is over 15 years old, it may be time to sod a new hybrid breed that would be better for your property.

Make sure to mow higher so your grass can crowd and choke out any weeds! Water only 1" a week!

Slender Aster is what you have, later in the year it put out a small white flowe with a yellow center. Very difficult to control. You might consider just hand pulling it if it is not widely spread. If you want to spray with herbicide I would recommend looking into Lontrel, this is the only viable selective option.

2,4-D will just piss it off, its WAY to hot for atrazine this time of the year, you WILL smoke your St Augustine if you go that route.

Hope this helps.

Ask the Agronomist(TM) says ....
Aggiegolfsuper is wise. Aster it is, and a tough customer. Not only is it a thin, tough leafed broadleaf, it is a perennial with root reserves galore. Any normal broadleaf herbicide that naile it will cook your augustine. I can see two solutions: 1. Hand pull (no weed can survive this). 2. You might try atrizine granules in a spot or two and see if that is easier on your augustine.

Old Sarge your nursery owner is a dumbass. That looks absolutely nothing like barnyard grass. Aggiegolfsuper knows his stuff pretty well.
