I know you aren't supposed to list on this board, but I just wanted to make sure and get this out on the outdoor board where I know more people will know what a blue lacy is. Hopefully get the attention of a few people who dont check the classifieds board. Thanks for looking.

do they make good family pets? I imagine the work drive is very strong and they could get destructive if not given enough running room?

Lacys make excellent pets, the three that we have right now are just family pets. We would have loved to have trained them to blood trail are hunt hogs etc., but just never had the time in our schedules to be able to work them. They do like to able able to run around and burn off some energy, but ours have never really been destructive.

Ole Rat is ready to stud anytime anyone needs his services.

He is much bigger and thicker than this now.

The other is a pug/corgi mix and is the best dang scorpion dog you have ever seen

Texag, first off that is a beautiful Lacy,he appears to be more muscular than ours (although ours is a female). If you don't mind me asking how old is your Lacy? I have a female that is 7 months old, about that height and 37 or so lbs. How much larger, assuming that she will grow to be "normal" size, should I expect? I have seen between 35-45 lbs, but just wanted to see what you thought.

Also, have you used your Lacy for bird hunting at all? I have heard that they can be good field dogs, but I have also heard otherwise.

THanks,

I am not the Lacy expert, however we did have a momma lacy dog back in the 70's and 80's that had over 100 pups and help keep the breed alive when numbers were low. Most Lacy today can be traced back to that old momma dog, or to the line she came form down at old man Long's in Kingsland, TX. Think #s are as high now as they have ever been.

Rat is my dad's dog, so I don’t make the vet trips, so I do not know what he weighs....My best guestimate would be 32-36 lbs. He runs constantly (mainly chasing my deer) and has no fat whatsoever and is all bone and muscle. Bigger Lacys probably have some BM Cur or other stuff in them as a male Lacy should not break 40-42 lbs in my opinion.

Cow dog, coon dog, hog dog they are...Bird dog, hard to see that one. Rat helps the old man pen cattle and he will tree a coon any night and let you know it. They are really bad about being a little trashy and they will chase deer if they can get close to one and only near-death from over heating stops them, but a shock collar normally takes care of that.

They can be a heck of a guard dog as well and some have to be watched around children as they can snap at times. But, these dogs really were not bred to be kid dogs, but rather working dogs as a better athlete on 4 paws you would be hard to find, and a grittier dog you will NOT find.

Hope that helps...

Sure CW2011 can add to this as well.

That was a great description of our Lacy/the Lacy breed, the wifey got a good little laugh out of it, do you know our Ms. Sidney?

I have pretty much come to the conclusion, on my own, that Lacy dogs weren't bred to be bird dogs. I used to have a Blue Tick Coonhound and He is the closest thing to our Lacy that I have ever seen.

Sidney came from Pecan Peak Ranch, in Zephyr, TX. I'll try to find a photo of her and get it posted. Thank you for the info, Blue Lacy dogs are one of the most fun and rewarding breeds I have been around, there is no shortage of presonality. Thanks again!

Schooner, I got a Red Male Lacy from Pecan Peak Ranch. PPR Rose is his mother and the description they have for her is right on. Our boy, Brazos, is a red ferrari. Lacy's have more will and determination than anything I have ever seen. Ours works on the ranch when we work cattle and lives in the house her in Missouri City when we are not in South Texas. Love the guy, can be a little strong willed but definately worth it.

I took my Lacy dove hunting yesterday. It was officially for the first time. But she had one day of late season action last December. She is just 1 year old. She already tracks blood and can take you to a deer no problem. She did fairly well yesterday. She helped me find a hand full of birds both before I arrived to the area the bird dropped, and quite a few times that I had lost the bird due to higher grass. She picked them up with her mouth- a very soft mouth- at that- and halfway brought them to me- but never came all the way to me for bird in hand. Perhaps with time I can fix that last little bit.

I will not say that they are bird dogs- obviously if thats a big concern go get a retriever; but she did good enough that I can never justify buying a retriever as long as she is alive to do the things that mine won't do.

While I agree that they were not bred for the purpose of birds and retrieving, speaking on behalf of their character- all they want to do is please you and I think with enough patience they will pretty much do anything you want them to do- regardless of what they were "bred for" or not.

Hope that helps some people that were curious.

Also- my other Lacy male is 8 months old and he is topped out at 50 lbs. He is a little heavy set like his father but it doesn't bother me at all. That is in weight. He is all muscle and lean. He is as pure as they come with papers and everything tracing him back to the ranch in Marble Falls.
