any horticulture majors that can tell me how rare, or not rare, these are? Encountered one on a family ranch and thought it to be really unusual. Don't know how to post a pic but would be glad to if someone could give me some help. Beautiful pic, for an iphone and some serious editing. Thanks in advance.

Wouldn't those be called whitebonnets?

upload the pick to www.imgur.com

Copy/paste the "direct url" - should end in a ".jpg"

type this in a post here on TA:
[ img]image url[ /img]

But remove the space between the first bracket and the img in both sets.

Here is more forum code info:

I an old guy so we will try anyway. Thanks for the help. And, by the way, no it would not be called whitebonnets. The correct term would be white bluebonnets. Don't shoot the messenger, that's just the way it is.

Hope this works.
Edit- sorry for the pixel-heavy rendition, remember I am a newbie at this

I don't know how rare they are, but I used to see one or two every year around home. They are pretty cool looking.

Very nice. I look for them everytime I am out. That and the elusive Chupacabra make for some long days of searching.

I saw some for the first time about a week ago. Never knew they existed.

Albino Bluebonnet

From Wiki:
"Lupinus texensis is almost exclusively blue in the wild. A random genetic mutation does occasionally create an albino white bluebonnet naturally. Texas A&M University researchers were successful in breeding red and white strains, creating a Texas state flag in bluebonnets for the 1986 Texas Sesquicentennial. Further research led to a deep maroon strain, the university's official color."

Not terribly rare. Maybe similar in rareity to a four leaf clover. However, there are much easier to spot due to size and color.

There is a patch off of Hwy 80 in Forney that pops up every year for the last three years.

We have white bluebonnets in our little platz every year. They migrate around a bit though. This year they're actually more pink than white.

quote:
This brings us to the question of what to call a white bluebonnet. While calling something blue that is actually white may seem inappropriate, an article by Jerry Parsons, Steve George and Greg Grant of the Texas Cooperative Extension points out that it’s proper to add the alternate color to the official name.

Stewball, very nice pics. Of all times to forget my Canon T1i! Still the iphone sufficed. Aperture 2.8 right? BTW, your screen-name is one of the most under-appreciated Robert Earl Keen songs of all time!
Anyway, I had never seen these before. But, as you guys have proven they must not be as rare as I thought. Won't buy a lottery ticket this week I guess.

Thank you. Actually, the single flower was 5.6 playing with macro and the other was 9.0 & 1/160. I tend to do weird things when I photograph. Completely just a fun hobby for me.
Stewball has always been one of my favorites, though there are so many to choose from.
