So the Mrs and I cooked a mean pot of chili today. She was in charge of the chopping, and chopped and veined the jalapenos with bare hands. They are now hands o' fire!

She's tried washing with rubbing alcohol, washing with sugar water, and lotion. What say you OB (other than wear latex gloves or get tougher skin)????

Milk? Lemon Juice?

I always wear gloves now when handling peppers. We had an "incident" once upon a time, haha.

Sour cream will work...it's better to me than milk as you can apply rather than sit around with your hands in a bucket. it takes a while for the burning to disapate. .

I prepared 500 "poppers" before a football game one early Saturday a few years ago for a tailgate and did not wear gloves.

By the 3rd quarter I had to leave the game, and seek medical attention... which included me drinking a 12 pack.

The burning stopped and I enjoyed the rest of the evening and an Aggie win.

Felt fine the next morning.

capsacian dissolves fairly well in lipids. rub some butter, or oil on area and let sit for a while, then wash off.

this works for your mouth as well.

Ive had that a few times but not too bad. The worst ever was i sneezed and covered my nose while chopping habaneros. The pain was unbelievable.

Or eat about 5 lbs of boiled crawdads without washing your hands PRIOR to handling the "package". If you forget, follow this advice:
1)Go to mens room at Joes Crabshack
2) find empty stall
3)use toilet paper to dry the sweat from your forehead as you wait for last guy to leave the area
4) lock door to restroom
5) pull down pants and wash junk with soap and water at sink area
6)unlock bathroom door and walk past the 10 or so guys who are now waiting
7) admit to your drinking buddy why you were gone for 10 minutes.

capful of bleach in a big bowl of water. Saok hands for 5 minutes or so. Saw this method on Good Eats tv show, it works.

Feminine wash will take the burn and smell right away. Discovered it by accident and wife was not happy with my choice remarks about what a marvelous cleaner it is. Good enough to wash hands after jalapenos and take out contacts.

The wife and I had an incident like this back when we were dating. Apparently the juice can still be on your fingers for hours without you knowing it. Wasn't the first time I had made a girl scream in bed, but it was the first time one did it from pain!! LOL

Would vinegar work? That's what we use for sunburn, as it leaches the heat out of your skin. Never tried it for pepper burn though.

I've always used veggie oil after handling peppers or CapsaicinH. Never had a problem.

And from Wikipedia:
quote:
Cold milk, along with other fatty drinks, is the most effective solution against the burning sensation (due to casein having a detergent effect on capsaicin[20]) and cold sugar solution (10%) at 20°C/68°F is almost as effective.[21] The burning sensation will slowly fade away in about 6–8 hours if no actions are taken.

Call me sheltered, but I've chopped many a a jalepeno with none of the effects mentioned here.

Does this only affect some people? Do you have to chope an entire bushel of peppers?

As I understand it, the hot stuff (capsaicin) is an oil. So it makes sense to me to wash my hands with that gunk that comes in an orange bottle at the auto parts store. This is my own little theory so I could be way wrong. And I'm good enough with a knife to cut/dice and remove all offending parts of the pepper without really getting my hands in the middle of it. So I haven't really needed to try out my little theory.

Also, this...
quote:
CAPSAICIN PAIN RELIEF

hot pepper Taste researchers have recently discovered that capsaicin, the component that gives peppers their heat, can also be used as an anesthetic and pain reliever. The foot treatment demonstrated on Frontiers is in an experimental stage of testing and not available to the public. (Over-the-counter gels and ointments contain a weaker solution of the chemical.)

Hot pepper candy made with chiles and taffy relieves mouth sores of people undergoing chemotherapy. Researchers believe capsaicin reduces substance P, a neurotransmitter that carries pain messages to the brain. To learn more, visit oncolink.upenn.edu/cancer_news/1994/hot_candy.html.

Remember, when handling hot chiles, wear rubber gloves and do not touch your lips or eyes.

Todd...

I have had this happen to me only once. I was deseeding a lot of jalapenos and it burned like hell. Every time I put them in some kind of liquid they would feel better until I took my hands out. Then they would start burning again. The only thing that helped was time.

Every other time I have messed with jalapenos I have not had this happen.
