I have hunted out there before. Plus I got paid to do it.

Oh, forgot to mention; I was hunting for natural gas.

I saw plenty of Muleys though.

i know Riata Management takes a "man weekend" for employees out there for hunting and folks usually have a pretty good time. They get paid for it as well. No specifics on how they fared hunting wise, however.

I haven't actually hunted on the Longfellow Ranch but I have hunted quite a bit in the Glass Mountains. The ranch is huge and you will see lots of mule deer as well as elk. If I was going I would want to know what type of hunt you will get for $4000. I would say that is a management deer in spite of their photo gallery. That is probably an older deer eight or under....something like that.

Hunting will be out of a dune buggy type vehicle made/fabricated in Ft Stockton....two wheel drive....no effective radio...no spare. NW80 and many others can tell you what no spare means.

You will probably never leave the vehicle except to shoot.....extremely wide open.

I would not pay for a hunt in the area of current gas operations. There will be plenty of deer....and roads...and people....not the best experience.

sunchaser, $4000 is for a "trophy" muley, talked to the ranch manager a while earlier

he said last year they had 60 guided hunts for sale and only sold 27 (I presume because of the bad economy). He said they had 24 kills out of 27 hunters, avg bucks were 160-170, largest was 208.

Anyhow, it looks like a good place, me and some other ppl are thinking about going this year

I would say that sounds pretty good then. I believe there price has been reduced from a couple of years ago.

You're out the full $4k regardless of whether you get a deer?

He will get a deer unless he is trophy hunting until sunset the last day.........assuming he doesn't have to carry a deer stand around with him....and then climb up to get a good rest for his rifle..

Is $4k the going rate?

choclab....That may be the going rate under the current economic conditions. "From memory" a couple of years ago most places in the Glass/Davis Mountain areas were like $4000 for management and $6000 for trophy. Most of the links I have no longer have a price schedule.

Aggzwin.....I would guess the video was taken on or near Longfellow. This is the vehicle they use....2wd....rough....will not crawl over stuff like a CJ etc....no spare unless they have added one.....but look like fun.

Not perfect odds, but good odds. Still, $4k in this economy is alot to gamble. I can see why they didn't fill all of their slots.

Um, $4k is not alot to gamble to many people out there. There are tons of people each year that pay $6k-$20k on elk, moose, grizzlies, goats, sheep, etc and come up empty handed.

Buck,

the ranch mgr said the only reason that 3 of the guys did not get muleys was because the weather was terrible while they were there, snowing, etc....

And if I had to guess, im sure they passed on some deer that they maybe wished they hadnt.

Id rather pay 4k and go on a real hunt and risk coming home empty handed then pay $1000 to go shoot any animal in a game fence

24 out of 27 is a really good kill rate. Not a bad price for a quality guided mule deer hunt.
