I have a shotgun that originally belonged to my grandmother's brother (who died long before I came along) and was wondering if ya'll could provide me a little more info on it. I doubt it's worth anything other than sentimental value, I just want to know some history.

All the info I have is what is stamped on the gun... Ward's Western Field, 16 gauge, SB562A.

And go!

quote:
The Western Field trademark has appeared literally on hundreds of various models (shotguns and rifles) sold through the Montgomery Ward retail network. Most of these models were manufactured through subcontracts with both domestic and international firearms manufacturers. Typically, they were "spec." guns made to sell at a specific price to undersell the competition. Most of these models were derivatives of existing factory models with less expensive wood and perhaps missing the features found on those models from which they were derived. To date, there has been very little interest in collecting Western Field guns, regardless of rarity. Rather than list Western Field models, a general guideline is that values generally are under those of their "1st generation relatives." As a result, prices are ascertained by the shooting value of the gun, rather than its collector value.

Also check out Montgomery Ward Firearms. Yours isn't listed on there, though.

I think the Wards guns and Sears guns are very cool. Not too much for collector value, but imagine a world where you could go to the hardware store and buy a 16 gauge. That is the world of our parents and grandparents.

I have a Westernfield lever action 30-30. I think it came through the Marlin factories. Kills swine just like a model 94. I dont know the history of it but absolutely love it.

I have a SxS 12 ga. Sears Roebuck & Co. 101.7c

bought for $150 in 2003, currently getting DIY restocked. It is nearly identical to a Stevens 311. Date stamp says 1967 and has no serial number.

jh-my gun looks like the pic you posted minus the choke.

It's a fun little gun to shoot and my success in hitting flying objects is greater with it than with our 12 ga 870 Express or our 12 ga SBE II. Now, if ammo wasn't so expensive AND hard to find....
