Last week a friend of mine "sold" me a holographic sight that looks identical to an EOTech. Everything functions the same except this one has an option of using a red or green reticle. I haven't mounted it yet and, depending on the feedback, will likely return it to him without ever using it. I've considered putting it on the AK for tomorrow's hog hunt to see if it will hold zero (well, as best as can be expected from an AK) to any degree of confidence.

Before anyone thinks my friend was trying to screw me, let me go ahead and say that he told me what I was buying. We were drinking and so not everything processed and I didn't fully realize the difference until later. He has already said he would take it back if I didn't like it.

I'm really just trying to get an idea on what I should expect if I do decide to try it out and if anyone here has any experience with them.

More than likely you can rest assured it's not as good as an EOtech, but who knows, it might work alright for you. DO you know what brand it is? You buy and EOtech, you know what you're getting. You buy something like Barska or Leapers and you don't. My $.02...

This was my thought as well, Bushnell sold a holosight made by EOTech that had identical electronics with a slightly less robust housing.

It's a good sight for general civilian use.

There is a post on AR15.com that tells you how to spot a fake eotech. I do not believe that all the fakes have the red/green option. But yes - if it does have a green option, it is a fake.

A real eotech uses a laser to project a hologram on the glass. The fake ones are basically a cheaply made red dot scope. They may or may not handle the recoil of some larger calibers before breaking. If its just a range toy and you are satisfied with it - then see how it holds up.

I'd never use one on any potential self defense weapon. I have two real eotechs and I like them. I have had a 511 model for over 3 years. And yesterday, I got in one of the new XPS models. It's very nice, and I am happy with it.

Not to hijack your thread, but if you happen to be as uneducated as me (make that formerly uneducated) about AR sights, then you could learn from my past mistake. A couple months ago I bought an NC Star red dot from a guy who didn't know if it was any good but he found it at an auction. My first mistake was seeing the box said $77 and he only wanted $50. I later learned I could have bought it for $45. Next, I learned the reviews by people who own them are about 90% negative. Finally, I took it to the range and watched the pretty little red dot move about 4 MOA with every shot. And the zero moves when you change from dot to dot/donut to crosshairs. Fortunately, this guy offered to buy it back.

What you have is probably better than an NC Star, and you also have the excuse of some alcohol being involved. I have to admit I was sober and made a dumb move because I didn't want to drop $400 for an EoTech.

I have an EOTech and put it on my girlfriends M4 for a while so I knew that I liked that style of sight. This sight is very similar and I'm curious as to how it will perform.

The guy that sold it to me is a close friend and I'm sure I'll be giving it back to him. I just figured that, for an AK, a $400 EOTech would be overkill and this was a decent, immediately available option.

I'm still not sure what the brand is. I'll have to check and report back later.
