The hunters that give the rest a bad name

Just ran off an idiot who was driving across my fields and a neighbor's CRP ground. Had a greyhound box and claimed he was just trying to retrieve a dog that wouldn't come back. As if his lack of dog training gave him the right to trespass.

I knew he was lying because the only reason the dog would have been out of the box was because he was hunting without permission. And the discovery after he left of old tracks told me he had been there before.

Next time someone won't grant you permission to hunt their land, say a silent bit of thanks to idiots like this.

Add the ones who don't leave gates like they found them.

Or leaving trash for someone else to pick up.

Or shooting stuff that they "assumed" would be okay to shoot.

The title of this thread should be; Poachers who give hunters a bad name.

I just want a quick answer, not trying to derail...

but my understanding is that illegally hunting (hunting without permission) legal game is just illegal hunting. Even though the landowner did not grant permission, it is not necessarily a restricted hunting area (since the landowner can hunt or permit others to hunt)... tresspassing and a few others would apply...

poaching is when conservation laws are broken (out of season, endangered species, illegal baiting, restricted area)

Coursing greyhounds is pretty cool. But it seems the greyhound crowd is a rough bunch. As a group, they are scumbags.

They drive country roads until a hound bays a coyote. Then they let the greyhounds out. It doesn't matter where they are, they just start hunting.

There was notorious bunch that frequented the area. My friend saw them and waited. Unlucky for the poachers, they let the hounds loose on friend's property. He killed five or six dogs. I don't know if poachers got the message or just didn't have anymore dogs, but they haven't returned.

I would hate to shoot a dog because their owner was a dumb@$$.

And coyotes are pretty cool, too. They are "my" coyotes and I want them left alone.

I didn't know folks hunted with greyhounds anymore. I had always heard that if you turned a greyhound loose in an unconfined area it would disappear.

Rebel, you are correct.

The distinction shouldn't be poachers/huntes. It should be criminals/hunters.

Here's what a trespasser's vehicle looks like. The color is off, it's actually a dark blue.

So, is that also the trespasser's name? Just curious, seems like a pretty noticeable name out in that neck of the woods.

Why don't you just call the Game Warden?

Don't want to accuse anyone, but if you Google "coyote dogs Amarillo" the picture above is posted on the top link. I wanted to post a picture of the truck, and found this picture that looks just like the trespasser. The truck I saw was dark blue, not black, but I think the truck pictured above is probably blue in full daylight.

County sheriff called, first priority was protecting my equipment from retaliatory damage. Game warden will be called Monday morning.

Don't understand why you're waiting till then to call the GW, but to each his own. These are not "illegal hunters"... they are criminals. They should be treated as such.

County sheriff was unwilling to do anything unless a deputy caught them in the act. Will see what GW says.

Calling any LEO is a problem when the jerk is running to get off your place. Short of holding them at gunpoint (much more trouble than it would be worth) I don't see any way of keeping them around for 45 minutes while a deputy drives out to an isolated part of the county.

And to correct myself, the truck above is a Dodge, my offender was driving a Ford. But I'm certain it's the same person. Have the license plate #, so will confirm it.

Fair enough... that's typical County Sheriff attitude... lazy and unwilling to help unless someone is dead or dying.

Should have called the game warden immediately.

You probably already know how this works, but just in case...

The guy has best hound, probably tied up on bed. Outlaw drives around the county roads. His coondog bays when he smells coyote. The guy has remote control in cab that opens all the other dog boxes. Then his dogs course the coyotes.

If he feels safe and has viewpoint, he'll watch the chase. Otherwise, he'll drive around for hour or so. Then he'll call his dogs back to truck.

That's how the locals eliminated the greyhound hunters here. People just started following him. He couldn't drop off his dogs to hunt. Or he couldn't pick them up after hunting. Game warden can really help here. Outlaw might return a couple hours later to pick up stray dog.

When neighbor saw him scouting, he hid. The poacher released dogs and left. Rancher just picked them off. Got a few while they were streaking. Got a few more when they were ripping the coyote.

Greyhounds are bred to get after coyotes. But they'll chase calves or anything else if bored. And the cattle freak out regardless. Put em down next time, just don't brag about it.

I'm trying to understand why the GW would not be your first call. You knew what he was doing, the GW has greater authority and is much more likely to have a much larger work area than several sheriffs. Once he looks up an sees the GW vehicle in his rear view mirror he may start to think about the results that could happen.
There always seems to be another ranch truck in your rear view mirror.

Parden my ignorance on the subject, I am not familiar with coyote hunting with greyhounds.

Let me get this straight- somebody drives around, releases their dogs, dogs kill coyote or 2, dogs return to truck, truck drives home?

What's the point? I can understand varmint hunting for pleasure, I can understand that a land owner may employ this method to rid his land of a coyote problem thats costing money out of his/her pocket. I can't really see the draw to what you are describing.

Someone sets out with their dogs and says to themselves, "the worst thing that could happen today is I get arrested. The best thing that could happen is ??????"

All coyote hunters don't do it as described above. My grand dad has had dogs for 50 years and never intentionally runs them on someones land who hasn't consented. The dogs will run across fences but he always did what he could to get them back and never went onto the neighboring pasture to finish the hunt.

He also doesn't hunt with greyhounds though so maybe that's the difference?

They like to watch greyhounds run down a coyote. It's a thrilling chase, like cheetah and impala. They also like watching the kill.

But if they can't watch the chase and kill, they'll still release them.

Like other guys with dogs, they like the training, breeding, etc. To see if they can raise and train the best coyote dogs in the area.

Greyhounds and coyotes really don't care about fences or property lines. So they run all over. And it's almost impossible to bring them back if they're on the hunt. If they lose the coyote or kill it, you can bring them back.

That would be cool to watch, but I kinda wonder how they keep the greyhounds from going after possums, coons, dillos, rabbits, etc.

That sounds like a sport I would be interested in.....how much do you think you would need to lead a greyhound at about 200 yards if he was running perpendicular to you?

I think it would be awesome to watch the chase and the kill, but it sounds like that is not a certainty.

I guess it's all fun and games until someone loses livestock.

Figuring that out would be the fun part. I would start with 1/2 a greyhound length.

....or you could aim right for the coyotes butt on the first shot and adjust back to the greyhounds.

how fast is the greyhound?

how fast in the bullet?

1) My land, my coyotes, I want them, so keep your dogs off.

2) I find it a bit disgusting, just a step above fighting pit bulls in a ring.

And best of all:

UPDATE: Got a call back from the sheriff's office. I don't think they originally planned to do much about this clown, but it turns out that mine was the second call on him. He had been complained about for doing the same thing, three days earlier. And apparently he was also involved in an incident 2-3 years ago where he was hunting on land where he had permission. That wasn't the problem. "Rounds whizzing over the heads" of folks nearby was the problem.

No surprise that an idiot/jerk is always an idiot/jerk.

How did I miss this? Saw your other post. Guys like this piss me off to no end!! There is a fair amount of hunt-able farmland/CRP north of the Metroplex, but guys like this have those doors shut tight for those of us who just want to hunt varmints/hogs.

Hope this guy gets effing reamed to the fullest extent of the law!!
