My dad is in the post office a couple of days ago waiting in line when a guy a couple of spots in front of him steps up to the counter and asks for a sandhill crane stamp. No kidding.

Not that unusual considering that federal waterfowl stamps can be purchased at Post Offices.

However, a federal waterfowl stamp is not needed to hunt sandhill cranes.

From TPWD:
Federal Sandhill Crane Hunting Permit (Type 590): FREE
This permit is required to hunt sandhill cranes. The permit can be obtained in person ONLY at TPWD Law Enforcement offices and TPWD headquarters in Austin, but also is available by phone at (800) 792-1112 (option 5, menu 2) or (512) 389-4820, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Friday or online any time. For phone and online orders, a confirmation number will be issued in lieu of a permit. A $5 transaction fee will be charged for online orders. Permittees should keep a record of hunting activities because 26% of crane hunters are chosen for a federal harvest survey.

I think they're just saying that those are the only places it can be obtained in person.

Why all the hate for the "Ribeye of the Sky"

Try this recipe:

Cut Sandhill Crane breasts into strips
Wrap with bacon and jalapeno
Grill until bacon is crisp and golden brown
toss out the Crane and wrap leftover bacon and peppers around grilled Ribeye skewers.

Damn fine eating!

peppers and bacon make anything taste good

Even peppers and bacon won't make sandhill crane taste good. Thats why he says toss out the bird and wrap it around the ribeye.

Since I have heard from here that both are less that top shelf in taste- would you rather eat sandhill crane or goose?

jayelbee - they changed the process this year. The Sandhill Crane permit can be obtained from a TPWD office or the post office in person, or via phone with TPWD, or online for a $5 fee (it's free otherwise).

Supposedly the reason for the change is that because they were free, Academy/Wal-Mart/etc... employees just put them on everyone's license. TPWD is trying to determine how many people are actually hunting the cranes.
