I want to get my dad a knife sharpening kit for Christmas. Went to Academy yesterday to pick one up and saw the two different brands.

Which one do you recommend? Smith or Lansky?

While we are on the topic - do you have any tips for using them? or is it one of those skills you just get better at with practice?

I prefer Lansky, but thats just my .02. I know a lot of people don't like them, but I have had good luck with it.

It does take a skill to get a really good edge.

There was a big thread last week about knife sharpening.

I have both and prefer the Lansky. It does take a little practice to get good with it but it is not that hard.

Lansky for my .02

I have had it for a few years and I am happy with it

I purchased a Lansky in the early 90's and still use it regularly on my cooking knives.

My suggestion is to get a few diamond sharpeners in the fine-extra fine. The expense is worth it.

What kind of 'skill' could possible be needed for a Lansky? Clamp knife, assemble stone, put in in one of three holes?

can someone bring up the other thread? I haven't looked into sharpening in quite some time. the last time I did, I almost bought a warthog. I didn't care for the lansky type

I never mastered a whetstone so I bought a Lansky about 15 years ago. I wore the stones out and replaced them with diamond stones.

I was at a gunshow and saw Arkansas stones from Lansky and I bought a hard and soft.

I use the medium and coarse diamond hones to correct serious problems. Normally the fine diamond and Arkansas soft followed by the hard work great for me.
