Those of you that frequent Port Mansfield might find this interesting..
I was looking thru some old work related files looking for something for an old friend and ran across a series of folders that I kept gags, jokes and misc crap in over the years.
I think the Redfish Motel was probably shut down by 1970....The Laguna Whatever across the channel was gone before that. The boat ramp at that time was on the south side of the marina.....There was enough parking space for maybe five.....and it was rarely full.....even on a weekend.
These maps were on pads at the Red Fish Motel counter....They predated any Hot Spot type maps and very few of the locations were named. The area around Marker 301 that is now called the Saucer or the Hole was called the Bombing Range due to a number of bomb targets. I started fishing south of the target area on the west side around 306.....one of my all time best fishing spots out of PortM....now known and named for a local....Peyton's Bay.
The other was the west side of 223 prior to entering the land cut. My all time best spot....now known as Gladis. You might see another boat in there once a year.
I bet a rookie can take that map and go find fish today....
