I am considering purchasing one of these bad boys. Does Rock River make a quality product? Anyone own one in 6.8?

I basically have my options narrowed down to the 6.8 mentioned above or a Marlin levergun in 308 or 338 express. I have the pennies necessary for the Marlin, but would not to save a while longer for the "black rifle." Another advantage for the Marlin is that I have an old 6x Weaver that I can throw on the lever gun and be happy for a while. I think I would want to top the 6.8 with a decent scope.

Rock River makes a qaulity rifle, you will be happy with the qaulity.

I have not shot a 6.8 but there are others on this board who shoot this round.

I like my 6.8, great shooter. only drawback is that it isnt a plinker with ammo running about a $1-$1.25 a shell.

Yea I have the rock river in 6.8 and it is pretty awesome. It shoots great but the ammo is about a dollar a shot. If your not worried about that and are not going to just blast away it will be a good gun for you.

^^^ What kind and power scope do you have your topped with? Does it live up to the MOA guarantee?

Thanks for the info guys. That really helps. Good to hear Rock River makes a quality (even if not top of the line) product. So no votes for the marlin though? Everyone likes the black rifle and 6.8.

Not to hijack the thread, but can you just switch the 6.8 spc upper on a standard .223 lower and swap clips or does the 6.8 spc require a different lower?

I just looked up the ballistics of the 6.8 round. I had assumed it would be a fairly powerful round. I was surprised to see it is signficantly less powerful than the 243.
Ballistics below:
.243 Win. (100 PSP) 2960/1945 velocity/energy
6.8mm SPC (115 PSP) 2625/1759 velocity/energy

I have generally considered the 243 my minimum deer caliber. I guess I am having some second thoughts about the 6.8 now.

I'm also wondering why the guys that developed the 6.8 didn't simply go to the 243? I mean it is based on the 308 and would seem a logical choice. Any insight?

They chose the 6.8 b/c length of cartridge fits in the standard AR. The .243 is long action cartridge that won't fit.

That energy is understated after the upgrades to the chamber for the hotter SSA loads. The original Remington loads were under powered.

You can shoot deer with .223 easily. I did it this past season on culls. Of course i shot head shots though. I wouldnt hesitate to use it for a body shot with a good round like a 60 grain NP or similar. A 55 grain v max does the job oN the ol noggin like a mofo.

My Stag Mod 7 Hunter 6.8 was just over $900, and I like the package. Good 2-stage trigger, SPC II chamber, and 1:11 twist stainless barrel..plus the Hogue handguard and grip.

And it's even more fun since I reload

Where did you buy your 6.8? I may also look into a 243 since the ammo is a little cheaper and seems to provide a little more pop.

The 6.8SPC outside an AR is like tits on a bull.

"Where did you buy your 6.8?"
I ordered the Stag thru Burdett's (College Station for the non-locals). Barry did the pricing/ordering.

Sorry for all the questions guys. I don't own a "black rifle," and I am generally ignorant on this subject. I am intrigued by the 6.8 because I am a big fan of the 277.

Dlance, the performance you mentioned, I could get this with the Rock River or no? The Rock River twist is 1:10.

Also,
I loaded 130gr Hornady SP and they shot extremely well and I plan on using those for deer.

Thanks guys. I will look into acquiring a Rock River or Stag. Although, it may be mid October before I am ready to buy.

I have a 6.8 SPC. It is made of the following: DPMS lower with Chip McCormick Super Match trigger, Cardinal Armory (Ko-Tonics) upper with Viking Tactical furniture, LaRue Tactical SPR-E mount and an Aimpoint 2X 1 MOA dot scope. Plenty good for deer and hogs. It is a real pleasure to shoot with almost no recoil and great ergonomics. The Aimpoint makes it easy. Here's mine.
