Most of the places I know, you either need a boat or it's on private property. If you don't mind getting wet, hit the beach towards San Luis Pass and do some wade fishing.

It's been a while since I've been out there but you might find some spots at the end of 8 mile road off of FM 3005. We used to go fishing there but in the last decade or so there has been so much development, you may not find a spot unless you trespass.

Iceman,

We should look into renting kayaks.... Aint trespassing if we don't come to shore.

Be careful where/when you wade fish around San Luis Pass, there are places with a pretty good current around there that will take you out with the tide. All the water in West Bay gets pulled out that little cut with the tide.

This is true. I should of said so. I was actually thinking more a few miles up the shore from the pass. Closer to Jamaica Beach would be better.

We had a summer house a mile or so up Chocolate Bayou for many years when I was a kid. I've fished Chocolate Bay, West Bay and around San Luis Pass a good deal. That is what I loved most, you never knew what might hit that line around there. Caught alot of Specks and Reds along those marsh banks of the bays.

There are tons of places to go where you don't need a boat and won't be trespassing.

Off of 8 Mile Road you can go to the end of Sportsman Rd. and fish the marsh or wade out towards Confederate Reef. Just park where Sportsman Rd. dead-ends. There is a place on Eckert Bayou off of Settegast Rd. where you can park and walk in.

There is a huge area of flats N/NE of San Luis Pass with hard sand bottom that is easily waded and often holds a lot of trout.

And if you cross the toll bridge a SLP there are easyily accessible spots that have good wading in both Christmas & Drum Bays.

I fish this gut marked here and regularly catch a ton of trout and flounder. It's a pretty firm bottom and as of 3 weeks ago only about waist-deep at high tide (I'm 6'3". The western mouth of this gut is extremely shallow (like less than 18" at high tide) so you're pretty safe too.

The gut is deepest closest to the shore and is about waist deep for about 20 yards and then slopes up to a flat that runs into the marsh island. I've had good success wading the flat and casting up-current at about a 45 degree angle and letting the current bring my lure back to me. This is going to bring your lure into the face of the waiting trout and flounder on the bottom. The few reds & drum I've caught here have been tight to both shorelines.

Plus there is a huge expanse of hard sand-bottomed flats about 400 yards due north of the pin in my photo titled "Fish this gut."

I didn't even think of this, but yes it is a good spot!

If you don't have a 4 wheel drive, be careful. There are some spots with very soft sand that you can get stuck.

Finn-

Do you do any good in Eckert? My brother lives right there and we have only caught a few throwback trout, usually when its very cold.

troutslime- I haven't fished Eckert since Ike but before that I'd do pretty decently on an incoming tide where the channel comes into the bayou NW of the launch spot. Right at the point of that island.

Eckert seems to be best when it's really hot or really cold though. Mrs. Finn's uncle had a house there on that little dog-leg south of the launch spot so I fished there often.

Can't wait till we can get out there.

Anyone have a place we can rent for a weekend?

Looks like Ike really opened up that gut behind SLP. How deep is it now? I waded across it last summer about chest high on a low tide. High tide, and you'd have to swim it, which was a little hairy with the current ripping thru. Not my type of fun. My buddy swam the main gut behind SLP once on a 2 tide day to get to the flats. Crazy SOB.

tx4guns- I've waded that gut behind SLP tons of times and even at the highest bull-tide I never had to swim.

Pre-Ike it was actually deeper than it is now except for a couple holes right up against the south shoreline that got hollowed out. I know SLP is dangerous but honestly, that gut I have marked is about as safe as you can get for wading. It's a pretty firm bottom, the deepest part is only about 20 yards across, and the both the eastern and western ends get really, really shallow so you can't really get swept away anywhere.

OK, cool. The only time I worried about it was in cold weather, and I didn't want to swamp my waders. Chose to back out and fish the shoreline (to no avail).
