I am going to visit my wife's family this weekend and they live on the Guadalupe River in Dewitt County. I have fished there in the past but have never had any luck. She wants to go with me this weekend, and I hate for her to get skunked. Anyone familiar with the river in this area. What to target? Bait?

I've caught many a buzz on the Guad - mostly used bait from Anheuser Busch.

where at in Dewitt county are you going. I am headed that way as well and my in-laws have property on the river. we are floating though.

As far as fishing, worms work well along with soap. as long as you can keep moving around after you stop getting bites, and you should catch some. Sometimes the problem is getting to the river, but if you do you should catch some. I would really go with worms and soap. We also caught some on stink bait as well. good luck

Yellow/blue/channel cats, some bass, carp, gars, etc.

If you want to fish for catfish, I'd suggest you get some cottonseed cake cubes in a sack and bait a hole, that will increase your odds at any given time.

Also if you set some throw lines with soap you will catch some fish, and at night put some perch on them and catch some yellows. We generally catch some fish with this method as well.

Worms = guaranteed perch = not skunked

The Guad. Bass are smaller so you cant throw anything big. I usually have luck on white roadrunners, or reg. grape plastic worms.

Sometimes a beetlespin works for me as well.

caught many catfish and drum on the worms. very few perch. Even caught a mess of bass (7) under a tree on worms as well.

ok...i grew up on the lake and what are you talking about fishing with soap?

I 2nd the cowcube idea, we would do this in lake travis and fish with 8 lbs test to catch buffalo carp and cats. It is a blast, remember to keep your bails open if you are doing carp fishing so there is no tension you will see the line run....but seriously what is with soap>?

I am talking about the night crawlers, not plastic.

Every time I take my wife fishing for cats, I get stuck more times than I care to think about.

I have tried beetle spins, road runners, etc. with little to no luck in the past. I'll probably just get a box of night crawlers and a 12 pack, and see what happens.

where at in dewitt are you gonna be fishing?

And you only need to fish a few feet off of the bank and down river for the cats.

we make soap with lard, and the lye. Then we add some meise oil (spelling) for scent. Poor into a soda flat and let set, then cut into cubes.

P&G soap was always the best store bought with Ivory coming in second. Caught many a cat on that stuff.

Wee Craw usually tears them up in the rivers...

The plastic craws tear up the bass in the rivers...

The bridge on 183 outside of Cuero cuts their land almost in half.

That is some pretty good water down there for channels. Are there any gravel bars up or down river that you can get to? If so try fishing the deep water just above the gravel bar and the swift water just below. The gars are really bad on the Guadalupe right now but they seem to stay in the deep slow moving water. Chicken hearts and worms work really well for channels. If you want to try for blues get some perch for cut bait and hope for a little luck.

If there are no gravel bars just try and fish close to the bank with chicken hearts or worms. That and a case of beer should make for a good afternoon.

I know them. My in-laws are outside the hocheim area.

So after all of that effort, the wife decided to sleep in on Saturday morning. I walked from the house down the the river and saw 19 deer. When I got home, we spent the rest of the day doing yard work. I was surprised how relaxing it is to rake leaves when you spend most of your time in an Apartment in Houston.
