it looks real bad as an infection has set in. In hospital
Mike's doctors have diagnosed his condition arising from the stingray wound as necrotizing fasciitis, common known as a flesh-eating or flesh-killing bacterial infection and they are doing all they can to stop the spread of the infection with antibotics and soon to begin hyperbaric treatment which is basically a pure oxygen breathing regimine to promote greater blood oxygen levels and increase the body's own healing capability.

It's the flesh eating bacteria that is the real problem. The stingray hit is just the entry point.
I had a friend get stuck by a pinfish in the bay one morning gathering bait before an offshore trip. By the time we got home that evening, his index finger was swollen to the point where he could not bend it. That night he went to the ER. The docs told him that they would try to save his hand, but more importantly, they were going to try to save his life. He ended up having a partial amputation of the finger and a long, slow recovery that compromised his immune system.
Nasty stuff.
I know Capt. Mike from tournaments and he is a nice guy with a true love for the water. I hope he heals up fast and gets back out there soon.

I think he got hit on Saturday or Sunday.

My son got hit by a little ray while wading off San Diego. No permanent damage, but apparently the venom worked its way up to the testicular region and made its presence painfully known.

Ouch, praying for the best. I HATE stingrays, my girlfriend thinks it is an unreasonable fear but they can do nasty things, especially combined with bad water.

That hurts just to look at! I hope he doesn't loose his foot....

Unfortunately with the internet comes false rumors. While Mike McBride did get hit by a sting ray, his foot is badly infected, IT IS NOT THE FLESH EATING BACTERIA.....VIBRIO VULNIFICUS!! Totally false.

He is on big time anti-biotics, a little morphine, he is out of the oxygen tent, and he will be fine; however he will be out of commission for a month or so.

It is safe to wade the waters of the lower laguna madre! I was down there all last week and the sting rays are out in huge numbers; I would certainly recomend wearing protective footwear. Academy makes a semi-comfortable sting ray boot/guard called Ray Guard.

I fished w McBride and he WAS wearing ray guard shin high guards the entire time we fished...he mentioned on many occasions to shuffle feet...damn bad luck.

McBride himself posted the pics of his foot so I would think negative on the photoshop conspiracy.

Not to mention Mont (owner of 2cool) created a forum today to raise money for McBride. Within the first 8 hours the bids exceed just over $3400 (not counting direct cash donation via paypay) for all of the items people are offering up to the auction (shotgun, guided fishing trips, custom fishing rod, Ray-guard boots (ironic!), wading supplies....etc).

I know McBride pretty well.....but not enough to identify him by his feet. Supposedly McTrout (which is McBride's nickname) posted this photo on 2coolfishing.com, however he has been in the hospital all day, under an oxygen tent so..... Anyway, I left Mansfield yesterday, and it was definitely the talk on the dock. Talked to another guide friend of mine, who saw him on the dock Saturday after he got hit, and who just got back from visiting him in the hospital. The ray only hit him once. However, he said it was powerful enough to knock his foot out from under him. By the time he got back to the dock, his foot had swollen up the like a softball. I know they had to drain fluid from his foot, so I don't know if incisions were made and they just magnified with the swelling. Supposedly he was trying to help a client unhook a big fish, they got into a "tango", and he took a step back and landed on the damn thing.

This is serious........and to think that some of you think this is a farce....is unbelievable to me.

By the way, that makes 3 friends hit that were wearing ray protection. They are NOT 100%!

Did he have the heavy ray boots, or those lighter reef boots?

I don't trust those lighter reef boots. I wear the heavy reef boots, they're like 1/2 inch thick reinforced rubber feet, plus the lower leg guards.

I'm just curious how a ray hits someone on the foot four times like that. Usually, they initial hit and swim away. Photoshop never crossed my mind, just thought someone could provide a better explanation.

edit: I guess they had to cut his foot open to release fluid.
